Job summary

LakewoodAquatics in Norwalk, CA is seeking an AgeGroupCoach to join our coaching team. We want a knowledgeable coach who can help swimmers maximize their potential through creative, engaging, and fun coaching methods within a positive, team-oriented environment.

The ideal candidate will coach swimmers aged roughly 6–18 across developmental through early senior levels, planning daily practices, attending meets (minimum one per month, with travel), and upholding USA Swimming certifications.

Qualifications

  • Coaching experience required, across multiple levels.
  • Must hold current USA Swimming certifications from the list above.
  • Ability to coach one or multiple practice groups Monday–Friday 4:00PM–8:00PM.
  • Available for weekend meets, with occasional travel.
  • Strong knowledge of stroke technique, starts, turns, and racing skills.
  • Excellent teaching, communication, and customer-service skills.
  • Positive attitude and professional demeanor with young athletes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning and conducting daily practices for all levels.
  • Coach swimmers aged 6–18, developing technique and confidence.
  • Provide creative, engaging, age-appropriate workouts.
  • Coach during meets, provide feedback and race guidance.
  • Maintain attendance records and communicate with Head Coach.
  • Support a positive, team-oriented culture and uphold USA Swimming policies.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with swimmers across multiple levels, from developmental swimming through early senior-level athletes, and will be committed to developing both the technical skills and character of our swimmers.

Position Schedule
  • Monday–Friday: 4:00PM–8:00PM
  • Saturday: Morningpractices
  • Swim Meets: Minimum of one meet per month, including occasional weekend travel
  • Additional hours may be available based on team needs, swimmer enrollment, and coaching assignments.
Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  1. 1. Previous coaching experience required, with a minimum of two years of experience preferred. Experience may include competitive club coaching, school swimming, or Learn-to-Swim instruction.
  2. 2. Current USA Swimming membership in good standing with required certifications, including:
    • o CPR/AED
    • o Safety Training for Swim Coaches
    • o Athlete Protection Training (APT)
    • o USA Swimming Background Check
  3. 3. Ability to work with and instruct one or multiple practice groups Monday–Friday from 4:00PM–8:00PM.
  4. 4. Availability to work weekend swim meets, including meets that may require travel.
  5. 5. Strong knowledge of competitive swimming stroke technique, fundamentals, starts, turns, and race skills.
  6. 6. Strong teaching and communication skills with the ability to work effectively with swimmers of varying ages and abilities.
  7. 7. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  8. 8. Strong customer-service skills and the ability to interact professionally with swimmers, parents, coaches, and board members.
  9. 9. Ability to work effectively as part of a coaching team and support the direction of the Head Coach.
  10. 10. Positive attitude, professional demeanor, and a genuine passion for developing young athletes.
Primary Responsibilities
Coaching & Athlete Development
  • Assist with planning and conducting daily team practices.
  • Work effectively within all levels of the Lakewood Aquatics program.
  • Coach swimmers ranging approximately from 6–18 years old.
  • Develop swimmers’ technical skills, stroke fundamentals, racing skills, endurance, and confidence.
  • Provide creative, challenging, and age-appropriate practices that keep swimmers engaged and motivated.
  • Coach workouts and provide appropriate instruction, feedback, and encouragement.
  • Monitor swimmer progress and communicate relevant observations to the Head Coach.
  • Support the development of a positive, team-oriented culture.
Swim Meets
  • Attend assigned swim meets, with a minimum expectation of one meet per month.
  • Coach swimmers during warm-ups, races, and between events.
  • Provide technical instruction, encouragement, and race feedback.
  • Help swimmers understand meet expectations, sportsmanship, and team responsibilities.
  • Arrive at swim meets prior to the scheduled arrival of athletes.
  • Assist with pool and team-area setup and take-down as needed.
Team Support
  • Assist other coaches and instructors as needed.
  • Substitute for other coaches when requested and available.
  • Work collaboratively with the Head Coach and other members of the coaching staff.
  • Be a positive role model for swimmers, families, and fellow staff members.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and follow all USA Swimming policies and Lakewood Aquatics procedures.
Professional Expectations
  • Arrive on time and prepared for every assigned practice and meet.
  • Maintain accurate daily swimmer attendance records.
  • Model appropriate dress, language, behavior, sportsmanship, and professionalism.
  • Create a safe, respectful, inclusive, and positive environment for all swimmers.
  • Communicate effectively with parents while keeping the Head Coach informed of significant swimmer or parent conversations and concerns.
  • Follow all Lakewood Aquatics policies, procedures, and coaching expectations.
  • Maintain current required USA Swimming certifications and background-check requirements.
Compensation & Work Schedule

Compensation: Pay is commensurate with coaching experience, qualifications, certifications, and responsibilities.

The specific work schedule and compensation will be outlined in the candidate’s offer letter. Coaching hours may increase or decrease based on team enrollment, program needs, group assignments, and seasonal scheduling.

Because consistency is essential to swimmer development, reliable attendance and punctuality are critical expectations of this position.
