We continually seek creative opportunities to inspire lasting, healthy change.

Ready to make a difference in a child's day? We'd love to hear from you.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Youth Counselor is a key member of the AWA Broward program team at Deerfield Beach Elementary School, responsible for the direct supervision, daily care, and active engagement of an assigned student group throughout all afterschool program activities. Working under the daily direction of the Teacher / Supervisor and the overall guidance of the Program Manager, Youth Counselors help bring FLIPANY's Arts, Wellness & Academics (AWA) programming to life — academic enrichment, physical activity, nutrition education, social-emotional learning, and creative arts — while keeping every student safe, engaged, and included.

This role operates in full compliance with the Children's Services Council (CSC) Maximizing Out of School Time (MOST) Inclusion grant requirements and the Broward County Before and Afterschool Child Care (BASCC) Quality Standards.

SCHEDULE

  • School Year: Monday–Friday, staggered shifts between 1:30 pm and 6:00 pm.

  • This is a part-time, school-year position. Summer camp opportunities may be available.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Student Supervision & Safety

  • Provide direct, active supervision of your student group at all times, indoors and outdoors

  • Lead transitions between activities, keeping accurate headcounts and group order

  • Wear your FLIPANY vendor badge visibly and carry required safety/communication equipment

  • Complete daily safety checks and report hazards, injuries, or incidents promptly

Program Activities & Instruction Support

  • Facilitate daily program activities — homework help, SEL/PATHS lessons, CATCH Kids Club physical activity, nutrition education, and arts enrichment

  • Lead SEL/PATHS lessons that reinforce positive behavior strategies and teachable moments

  • Lead energetic, inclusive CATCH Club physical activity sessions with safe, non-elimination play

  • Support nutrition education and healthy habits during snack and mealtimes

Attendance, Student Support & Family Communication

  • Take accurate attendance and maintain up-to-date student tracking records

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students through encouraging, inclusive engagement

  • Support students practicing SEL/PATHS skills — self-regulation, conflict resolution, and teamwork

  • Greet families warmly at arrival and dismissal as a positive representative of FLIPANY

  • Support students with IEPs, learning differences, or additional needs so every child can fully participate

Administrative & Compliance

  • Keep required personnel documents current and on file

  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development (min. 2.5 hrs/quarter), and orientations

  • Know and follow site emergency procedures, including fire, lockdown, and evacuation drills

WHAT YOU BRING

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Minimum age of 18

  • Ability to pass a Level 2 background screening and any additional clearances required by the Department of Children and Families, BASCC/BCPS, and CSC funding requirements

  • Willingness to complete required program trainings (CPR, CATCH Kids Club, PATHS, BASCC/BCPS-mandated training)

  • Experience working with children in afterschool programs, summer camps, recreation, or other youth-serving settings

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English sufficient to deliver instruction and document student records; bilingual ability in Spanish or Creole preferred

  • Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain consistent attendance throughout the school year

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative, team-first attitude
