Job summary

Town of Amherst is seeking an After School Group Leader/Counselor to provide educational and recreational experiences for children and guide activities.

As a team leader, you will design activities, supervise small groups, maintain records, coordinate with staff, and ensure safety in alignment with program philosophy.

Qualifications

• High School Degree or equivalent plus 1–3 years of demonstrated experience leading, guiding, and planning children's educational and recreational activities.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality; First Aid and CPR certifications or ability to acquire within three months of hire.
• Must pass CORI and SORI screens and SAFIS fingerprinting; ongoing trainings as required by local town or state.

Responsibilities

• Designs, plans, implements, and leads a wide range of educational and recreational activities for small groups of children and for the entire After-School Program.
• Manages children's activities, issues instruction, provides direction, monitors activities, and provides guidance; collaborates with staff to maintain a positive atmosphere for participants.
• Assists in maintaining attendance records; completes accident and incident reports and evaluations; submits reports to the Site Coordinator.
• Assists in inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment; communicates with schools, parents, staff, and children.
• Models and implements the department philosophy; performs related work as required.

Job description

AMHERST After School Group Leader/Counselor As a team leader for the After-School Program, the Group Leader/Counselor provides after-school day care educational and recreational experiences for children and guides and directs activities.

MAJOR DUTIES:

• Designs, plans, implements, and leads a wide range of educational and recreational activities for small groups of children and for the entire After-School Program;
• Manages children\'s activities, issues instruction, provides direction, monitors activities, and provides guidance. Works with collaboratively with other staff to establish and maintain positive atmosphere for Program participants.
• Assists the Site Coordinator in the maintenance of participant attendance record; Completes accident reports, incident reports, and evaluations; Submits reports and evaluations to the Site Coordinator in a timely manner.
• Assists in conducting inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment. Makes regular contacts with public school employees, other agencies, parents, staff, supervision, other instructors, and children, where most contacts involve an exchange of information, and instruction.
• Models and implements philosophy of department. Performs similar or related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High School Degree or equivalent PLUS one to three years of demonstrated experience leading, guiding, and planning children\'s educational and recreational activities; OR any equivalent combination of related education and experience. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Must have First Aid and CPR certifications or the ability to acquire certifications within three months of hire.
• Must be able to successfully pass CORI and SORI screens and SAFIS fingerprinting. Continued employment is contingent upon completion of Child Abuse Prevention, Safety, and other trainings as required by the local town or state.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education. Experience in creating educational and recreational curricula. Knowledgeable about child development, motivational, and child psychology techniques.
