Position Title: School Age Program Assistant

Reports To: Program Lead and Program Coordinator

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The School Age Program Assistant supports the Program Lead in planning and implementing engaging, developmentally appropriate activities for school-age children. The Program Assistant helps maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive environment that encourages exploration, creativity, and social growth. Under the direct supervision of a qualified Program Lead, the Program Assistant contributes to daily classroom operations, child supervision, and the overall success of the program while ensuring compliance with all state licensing rules, safety standards, and VHFLC policies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support the Program Lead in planning and implementing age-appropriate activities that promote learning, social development, and creativity.
  • Provide assistance in maintaining a safe, clean, and engaging environment for children, ensuring all areas meet health and safety standards.
  • Supervise children at all times under the direct oversight of a qualified Program Lead.
  • Actively engage with children through play, conversation, and participation in planned activities.
  • Promote positive behavior guidance and assist in fostering a respectful, inclusive environment.
  • Support the Program Lead in organizing materials, preparing activities, and managing transitions between activities.
  • Monitor indoor and outdoor environments to ensure safety, cleanliness, and appropriate use of equipment and materials.
  • Assist with documenting attendance, incidents, and other program-related records as directed by the Program Lead or Coordinator.
  • Communicate positively and professionally with children, families, and coworkers.
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions.
  • Uphold and model the values, policies, and procedures of Vermont Hills Family Life Center.
Supervision Requirements

A School Age Program Assistant works under the direct supervision of a qualified Program Lead and is never solely responsible for a group of children. The Assistant must remain within sight or sound of the Program Lead at all times while providing care and assistance to children.
The Program Assistant reports to the Program Lead and Program Coordinator and must ensure that all interactions and classroom practices align with VHFLC's mission, values, and Oregon state licensing requirements.

Requirements
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must meet the initial training requirements as established by the State of Oregon and VHFLC policy, including Orientation and Initial Training.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with children in a group setting.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to follow direction and collaborate as part of a team.
  • Understanding of basic principles of child development and positive guidance.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, dependability, and confidentiality.
  • Commitment to supporting a safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate environment for children.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds, bend, kneel, sit on the floor, and move quickly as needed for supervision and safety.
  • Work occurs primarily indoors, with frequent outdoor activities and supervision required.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and active participation in play with children.
