Qualifications

• A high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Effective communication skills including ability to interpret both signed and voice communication in ASL and Signed English.
• Thorough understanding of deaf culture.
• Verification of applicable course work.
• Ability to work cooperatively with students, classroom teachers and special educators.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate degree from Interpreter Preparation program or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university, or 5 years of experience in sign language interpreting.
• NIC (National Interpreter Certification) EIPA 2.5 or above (Educational Interpreter Performance assessment) Certifications, or State QAS level III.

Responsibilities

• Provide communication access to students who are deaf or hard of hearing by faithfully and accurately representing the afterschool activity instruction, teacher/student dialogue, and relevant sound information in the mod of communication used by the student.
• Ensure that the instructor’s message is being conveyed clearly and accurately while also ensuring the student has the opportunity to participate in the afterschool activity including discussions and social interactions.
• Work cooperatively with students and school staff.
• Maintain confidentiality and follow RID’s Professional Code of Conduct.
