AfPP SIG Lead – Non-Registered Perioperative Practitioners

Reports To: Clinical Patient Safety Quality Lead

Key Relationships: AfPP HQ (Education Lead, Clinical Patient Safety Lead, Production Editor for Innovation, People and Practice (IPP) magazine, Events Team, Marketing Team), Local Regional Team.

Role Summary: The Specialist Interest Group (SIG) lead plays a pivotal role in supporting the Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) by leading and coordinating the activities of the SIG and online Forum.

Fostering professional engagement, facilitating networking opportunities, supporting members and promoting high standards of perioperative practice.

The role will include leading the online forum, sharing specialised knowledge and exchanging ideas as topic moderators (posting new topics weekly), and managing topic threads by encouraging member activity.

Term of Appointment: Initial term of up to three years, ensuring continuity and succession planning for the SIG.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and coordination

• Maintain SIG email account and correspond with AfPP HQ and members appropriately.
• Manage the SIG, ensuring alignment with the overall strategies and objectives of the organisation.
• Maintain and monitor the SIG forum weekly ensuring there are current topical themes available and responding to topic threads as appropriate.
• Ensure effective communication and collaboration with SIG support and HQ team.
• Share SIG achievements, challenges, and updates with the AfPP HQ Team.
• Maintain an active succession plan to ensure the continuance of the SIG and its activity.
• Liaise regularly with the Clinical Patient Safety & Quality Lead and Education Lead.

Educational and Editorial Activities

• Plan and deliver at least one webinar annually, adhering to events and marketing planning timelines.
• Organise and promote one speciality symposium biannually with the AfPP HQ team.
• Support the Regional Team, AfPP HQ Events Team and Education Lead with SIG speciality-specific knowledge for education and events as required.
• Each SIG is to provide a one article per year, to the AfPP Production Editor for publication Innovation People and Practice (IPP) magazine/e-bulletin.
• Provide spotlight article biannual for the IPP, highlighting and showcasing the SIG.
• Liaise with AfPP Marketing Team providing SIG speciality information, latest developments and latest news for AfPP monthly ebulletin.

Networking and Engagement

• Represent the SIG within the broader AfPP community, advocating for the interests and needs of the group.
• Build and maintain active local networks through meetings, events, and regular communication.
• Disseminate and promote relevant information about AfPP and SIG activities.

Commitment

• A time commitment of around 6- 8 hours per month, varying throughout the year.
• Attendance at AfPP Annual National Conference in person and Annual General Meeting (AGM) online.
• Advocate for AfPP’s mission, values, and professional standards.
• Act as the primary representative of AfPP for the SIG providing specialist advice to the Association and SIG Forum.
• Advocate for best practices in perioperative care, championing patient safety and practitioner wellbeing.

Personal Specification

Current Member of AfPP Understanding of AfPP’s mission and values

An established network within the perioperative community and SIG speciality. Familiarity with social media platforms for professional engagement and promotion.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills with good attention to detail. Previous experience in delivering presentations and webinars.

Ability to work independently and act on own initiative, with excellent organisational and time-management skills. Ability to inspire, motivate, and engage a diverse group of professionals.

Passion for professional excellence and experience within the identified SIG speciality. Previous experience in a leadership or coordination role.

Ability to build and sustain collaborative relationships.
