Job description

Urban Sky is a venture-backed aerospace startup on a mission to pioneer humanity’s routine, easy access to the stratosphere and the value locked within it. We design, build, operate, and sell stratospheric balloon systems. The data we collect supports a wide range of applications, from real-time wildfire monitoring to urban mapping. Our technology is also employed by government customers including the Department of War (DoW), NASA, and others. Urban Sky sends flight vehicles to the stratosphere on a weekly basis.

Our team consists of engineers, makers, developers, and doers who believe in the power of human potential when passion meets utility within a small, supportive team. At Urban Sky we strive to create a team culture grounded in candor, inclusion, respect and empowerment.

We aim to build the next chapter of stratospheric history in Denver and Texas and are seeking self-starting, open-minded, and hard-working team members.

About the role

Urban Sky is looking for a Quality, Test, and Refurbishment Technician to join our Safety, Quality, Safety, & Mission Assurance team in Denver. You'll be a daily presence on our manufacturing floor, performing inspections of both soft goods and hard goods, maintaining our calibrated tool inventory, documenting and dispositioning nonconforming material, authoring quality work instructions, testing and refurbishing our stratospheric systems, and working side-by-side with the production team to keep us on time and first time right. This is a hands‑on role for someone who takes safety, quality, and reliability personally and wants to make a real impact on products that fly to the edge of space.

Key Functions
  • Perform incoming, in-process, and final inspections of soft goods and hard goods against drawings, work instructions, and other quality acceptance criteria
  • Identify, tag, segregate, and disposition nonconforming material; maintain accurate records in our manufacturing system
  • Perform rework and refurbishment on hardware and soft goods in conjunction with manufacturing
  • Issue Quality Alerts and support root cause analysis and corrective action activities when nonconformances occur
  • Author and maintain quality work instructions and inspection procedures; manage document revisions through our controlled document system
  • Maintain the calibration log for all gauges and measuring instruments; coordinate internal and third‑party calibrations
  • Ensure product traceability requirements are met throughout production, including part numbers, serial numbers, lot tracking, and Certificates of Conformance
  • Work directly with the manufacturing team on the floor to prevent defects at source and support on‑time delivery
  • Perform testing activities, including R&D, verification, and validation test suites
  • Participate in quality issue resolution, PFMEA and Control Plan reviews, and process improvement initiatives
  • Support internal audits and help maintain Urban Sky’s AS9100 and ISO9001 certified QMS
  • Verify supplier documentation and support incoming inspection of externally provided materials
Qualifications
  • 2–3 years of experience in a quality or test technician, quality inspector, or QA role in aerospace, defense, or high‑reliability manufacturing
  • Working knowledge of AS9100, ISO 9001, or similar quality management system requirements
  • Ability to read and follow work instructions, test specifications, quality inspection procedures, engineering drawings, and other procedures
  • Experience testing and inspecting both soft goods and/or hard goods against engineering drawings and quality specifications
  • Hands‑on experience with quality inspection, diagnosis, and functional testing of mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical systems
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments and gauges and performing tests in compliance with specific, written instructions and requirements
  • Experience documenting nonconformances and performing dispositions
  • Familiarity with calibration management and maintaining a calibrated tool inventory
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills — able to write clear, unambiguous work instructions, inspection records, and communicate technical information accurately with team members and leadership
  • Comfortable working directly on an active production floor
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365; experience with ERP/MRP systems a plus
  • High school diploma required; technical degree or equivalent vocational training preferred
Nice-to-Haves
  • Direct experience with AS9100 or ISO 9001 quality management systems
  • Structured problem‑solving experience: 8D, 5-Why, A3, Ishikawa
  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or 5S experience
  • Experience with data analysis or statistical tools (Minitab, Excel, or similar) for quality trending, SPC, or process capability studies
Requirements
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Must be located near Denver, CO and work on‑site at our Denver facility
  • Flexibility to occasionally work extended hours, including evenings or weekends, during periods of high workload
  • Medical, Vision and Dental
