Job summary

Impulse Space in Redondo Beach is seeking a Materials Engineering Technician to anchor mechanical testing capabilities in the lab. You will perform a wide range of tests on metals, polymers, composites, and ceramics used in orbital vehicles and propulsion systems.

You will follow ASTM/ISO standards, ensure data integrity, and maintain test setups and equipment. A minimum high school diploma and hands-on testing experience are required; associate’s degree and 5+ years are preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalency certificate.
• 3+ years of direct experience operating mechanical testing equipment in a laboratory.
• Experience testing metals, polymers, composites, and ceramics.
• Knowledge of mechanical testing standards (e.g., ASTM E8, D3039, D638, C1161) and specimen geometry.

Responsibilities

• Set up and operate universal testing machines for tensile, compression, flexural, shear, and fatigue tests.
• Adhere to ASTM, ISO, and internal standards for aerospace applications.
• Prepare specimens with precise tolerances and finishes prior to testing.
• Install and align gripping/fixturing for complex test setups, including high-temp or cryogenic conditions.
• Record, process, and report test data for design teams.
• Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of lab equipment.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized laboratory environment.
