Job summary

Ultra Maritime in the United States is seeking a tooling technician to support tooling engineers, plan and test tooling projects, and manufacture precision tools. You will build and repair tools from blueprints, set up machines, and verify tolerances to ensure high quality.

This role emphasizes hands-on training through apprenticeships to associate degrees, with opportunities to work on CFRP, GFRP, and high-performance materials, alongside a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

  • Apprenticeship: 3–5 years hands-on training with classroom instruction.
  • Technical/trade school certificate: 6 months–2 years CNC/machining programs.
  • Associate degree: 2 years; broader theory plus hands-on; helps with advancement.

Responsibilities

Supports tooling engineers with planning, testing and related activities within assigned projects.

Job Description

Builds and repairs custom machine shop tools using machining equipment and measuring instruments. Works from blueprints and sketches to create or modify prototypes, tools, dies, jigs, fixtures and molds. Calculates the dimensions and tolerances required to set up the machine tools. Operates lathes, grinders, milling, and boring machines to produce tools.

Generally, is participating in:

Apprenticeship

3–5 years, hands-on training combined with classroom instruction; often the gold standard.

Technical/trade school certificate

6 months–2 years Focused CNC/machining programs, often at community colleges.

Associate degree

(e.g., Machine Tool Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Tech) 2 years Broader theory plus hands-on; helps with advancement.

Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)

Prepreg laminates, structural components.

Fiberglass (GFRP)

E-glass, S-glass composites Radomes, fairings, interior panels

Aramid composites

Kevlar-reinforced Impact-resistant structures

High-performance thermoplastics

Urethane And Related Materials Experience.

Preferably certified with:

  • NIMS (National Institute for Metalworking Skills) — the leading industry credential, with certifications in areas like CNC milling, turning, and measurement
  • AS9100 / GD&T training — geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (ASME Y14.5) is critical for aerospace
  • CAM software proficiency (Mastercam, Esprit, NX)

Expected Compensation: The expected compensation range for this role is $65,312.00 - $81,536.00.

Please note this represents the expected range. Ultra Maritime considers multiple factors when determining final compensation, including the scope and responsibilities of the role, a candidate’s relevant experience and education, certifications and training, as well as current business and market conditions.
