Job summary

The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC seeks a Museum Specialist in the Collections Processing Unit to lead the handling, packing, storage, and transport of national artifacts across NASM sites. The role focuses on ensuring safe care and movement of diverse artifacts, coordinating projects with a team, and maintaining detailed records.

The position requires experience with large aerospace artifacts, crating, and transport, plus the ability to work across NASM locations, while leveraging

Qualifications

One year of specialized experience at IS/GS-9 level or equivalent.
Experience handling large aerospace artifacts and coordinating transportation.
Experience packing and crating artifacts for transportation with appropriate materials.

Responsibilities

Provide leadership and technical expertise for collection-related projects.
Lead a team of museum technicians for packing, handling, and movement of artifacts.
Maintain and update artifact records using The Museum System.
Disassemble/assemble, crate, and cradle artifacts for safe handling and storage.
Operate equipment (trucks, hoists, forklifts) as part of handling tasks.
