Job summary

CPS Inc. is seeking an Aerosol Coatings Chemist in Zion, IL, to contribute to early-stage formulation work and scale‑up activities. You will innovate, develop, and commercialize aerosol paints and coatings, supporting both solvent-borne and waterborne systems.

You will lead projects, collaborate across R&D, manufacturing, and marketing, and drive ideas toward market readiness while maintaining strong technical and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Early career aerosol paint formulation chemist.
  • BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials, or related field.
  • MS or PhD strongly preferred.
  • 3-15 years of aerosol formulations experience in paint and coatings from bench to commercial scale.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Drive product innovation by researching and integrating new raw materials, technologies, and methodologies into aerosol formulations to enhance performance.
  • Identify, research, and prototype innovative ideas.
  • Address and resolve formulation and application challenges, including issues related to stability, compatibility, and application efficacy.
  • Communicate effectively with project stakeholders and cross‑functional teams.

Job description

Aerosol Coatings Chemist

This is a new position for an early career Chemist who’s been doing some aerosol formulations work. Will be developing new paints and coatings in aerosol formulations and being involved in the scale up and manufacturing process. As our R&D Scientist you will innovate, scale up, and commercialize existing and new cost-effective quality technology by contributing technical expertise to the corporate planning process, quickly responding to market opportunities, and defending the corporation against competitive threats.

  • Strong understanding of scientific methodology, hypothesis-driven research, and problem-solving capability using experimental design, data analysis, and documentation.

Coating Formulation Science
  • Lead the design, development, and optimization of aerosol coating formulations, including paints, sprays, and specialty coatings for various consumer applications both solvent-borne and waterborne.
  • Utilize in-depth knowledge of aerosol technology, including propellant systems, valve systems, and spray mechanics, to develop high-performance products.
  • Analytical science and material science with an emphasis on structure–property relationship.
Technical Leadership
  • Ability to develop and implement project plans and timelines while managing multiple high-level projects.
  • Measure progress and provide updates in alignment with marketing.
  • Demonstrate capability as a vocal and influential voice in project planning and deliverables in collaboration with cross‑functional teams.
  • Make strategic technical and staff utilization decisions and influence leaders and scientists to execute initiatives while managing business strategy and value creation.
  • Outstanding technical, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.

  • Communicate effectively with project stakeholders, cross‑functional teams, leadership, and external scientific community.

  • Build strong partnerships internally within R&D and internal functions (marketing, manufacturing, sourcing, etc.) and externally (vendors, customers, etc.).

Salary and Benefits

Salary: $75,000 - $100,000 + Bonus. Benefits include all insurance options, 401K, Pension Plan, vacation time, and more.

Technical Experience and Education
  • Early career aerosol paint formulation chemist.
  • Prefer BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials, or other equivalent scientific field.
  • MS or PhD strongly preferred.
  • 3-15 years of aerosol formulations experience in paint and coatings from bench to commercial scale.
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
  • Attentive listener to understand finer points.
  • Key attributes: strong business mind, customer focus, multitasking ability, can‑do attitude, and track record of product commercialization.
