Job summary

The College of Southern Nevada invites applications for an Advisor in TRIO Student Support Services. You will advise first-generation, low-income and students with disabilities, helping them develop academic plans, decision-making skills, and successful transfer strategies to four-year institutions.

You will assist the Director with recruiting students, creating workshops, and presenting college-success sessions, while building partnerships across departments and maintaining compliance with

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from regionally accredited college or university.
  • 1 year of academic advising experience at a college or university.
  • Knowledge of academic advising principles and best practices.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • 3 years of academic advising experience with students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of Federal TRIO Programs.

Responsibilities

  • Advise students participating in the TRIO program and develop educational opportunities.
  • Develop and implement services to help first-generation, low-income and disabled students succeed.
  • Assist the Director with recruiting students and creating workshops on college success.
  • Present on college success strategies and transfer planning.
  • Build partnerships with other departments and maintain compliance with student records.

Job Description

This Advisor position exists for the purpose of advising studentswho are participating in the TRIO Student Support Services federalgrant program. The position is expected to conceptualize, develop,and implement educational opportunities and services for studentsthat are first-generation, low-income, and students withdisabilities that help promote academic and decision-making skillsleading to successful college graduation and admission intofour-year institutions. This position is also responsible forassisting the Director with recruiting students, creating workshopsand presenting on college success strategies, building partnershipswith other departments, and maintaining compliance with studentrecords.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from regionally accredited college oruniversity; OR equivalent combination of education andexperience.
  • 1 year of academic advising experience at a college oruniversity.
  • Knowledge of academic advising principles and bestpractices.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree from regionally accredited college oruniversity.
  • 3 years of academic advising experience working with studentswith disabilities.
  • Knowledge of Federal TRIO Programs.
The ideal candidate should possess the following knowledge,skills, and abilities:
  • The Advisor must have a working knowledge of advising, studentdevelopment, retention, and student success best practices andstrategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective academic, personal,financial, adjustment and career advisement to students withdisabilities.
  • Exhibit excellent critical thinking skills through ademonstrated ability to interpret and evaluate explanations ofproblems of sensitive and complex nature, analyzing and definingissues obtained explicitly and implicitly from students, facultyand staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate and assess student academicneeds, strengths and weaknesses, and with student input developappropriate courses of action.
  • Able to develop, implement and present workshops pertaining tocollege success and advanced learning strategies, effectivegraduation planning, and transfer agreements.
  • Exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of at-risk anddisadvantaged students with diverse academic, socioeconomic,cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds typical of communitycollege students.
  • Possess strong problem-solving skills, resourcefulness, anddemonstrated ability as a self-starter planning and carrying outshort-term and long-term action plan.
  • Must be approachable and personable and articulate withexcellent writing, interpersonal and public speaking skills, andable to communicate effectively with students, faculty andstaff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of FERPA including ability to interpretand adhere to student privacy policies.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and computer databasemanagement.
Salary Information
  • Administrative Faculty B - The Starting Salary is $50,207

*This position is grant funded, and contingent upon ongoing andavailable funding through August 31, 2030.
