Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Metropolitan Campus in Teaneck, NJ invites applications for an Advisement Counselor (Bilingual). Reporting to the Director of the Advising Center, you will provide advisement in Spanish to HACER and Puerta al Futuro program students, support Open Houses, Orientation, Admitted Student Day, and coordinate with campus offices to enhance student success.

  • Fluency in Spanish and English.

  • Excellent oral and written communication in both languages.

Job Summary:

The incumbent reports to the Director of the Advising Center on theMetropolitan Campus. The primary responsibilities of this positionare to engage in all student advisement service, in Spanish, ofstudents in the HACER and Puerta al Futuro programs of FDU’sHispanic Center as well as for undergraduate students in BectonCollege, and the School of Psychology and Counseling. Providesassistance and support for Open Houses, Orientation, and AdmittedStudent Day programs. This advisor will work closely in deliveringadvising services to all members of the college community, inaddition to working closely with other support offices on thestudents’ behalf.

Required Qualifications:
  1. 1. Bachelor’s degree with two – three years’ experience in advisingand student program planning or equivalent combination required.Master’s Degree in counseling, student personnel administration orrelated field highly desirable.
  2. 2. Fluency and literacy in both Spanish and English (preferablynative speaker of one of these languages with superior-levelproficiency, as described in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines athttps://www.actfl.org/resources/actfl-proficiency-guidelines-2012,in the other).
  3. 3. Must have an understanding of retention and first year studentissues in general and with special focus on issues offirst-generation and immigrant students.
  4. 4. Ability to learn extensive requirements, policies and proceduresand explain them to students and their family members as well ascommunity members, in both English and Spanish.
  5. 5. Excellent oral, written, and listening skills in both Englishand Spanish with a sensitivity to student needs.
  6. 6. Familiarity with the North Jersey Hispanic Community and itscultural practices.
  7. 7. Excellent organizational, problem solving and time managementskills.
  8. 8. Computer proficiency, including knowledge of Microsoft Word,Excel, Access, database software and web navigation. Experiencewith student databases, self-service, advise and degree auditsystems is desirable.
  9. 9. Willing and able to work non-standard hours as required,including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  10. 10. Ability to maintain confidentiality in dealing with students,staff and faculty.
  11. 11. Ability to contribute to a supportive, team-orientedenvironment.

  13. 13. Valid driver’s license and accessibility to a car for travel tothe Metropolitan Campus and/or off-campus locations asrequired.
