Job summary

Camp Courageous, Inc. is seeking an Adventure Activity Specialist to organize and oversee the adventure program for campers with diverse abilities. You will ensure safety, lead activity planning, and collaborate with the program team to create engaging schedules and events.

The role requires strong leadership, experience with disabilities, and certifications in lifeguarding and First Aid/CPR, with a focus on delivering safe, high-quality adventure experiences in varying conditions.

Qualifications

  • Must have Medication Manager certification for Iowa or in-house Medication Manager Course within 30 days.
  • Adult and Child Mandatory Reporter.
  • Current Lifeguard certification, Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Ability to walk long distances and stand for long periods; tolerate weather conditions; lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Sincere interest in working with individuals with intellectual and/or physical disabilities.

Job description

  • Interest, knowledge and skills in field of adventure activities
  • Leadership and teaching ability
  • Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities and programming in adventure activities preferred.

Position Overview:

With the aid of the Program Director and Assistant Program Director the Adventure Activity Specialist is responsible for organizing and administering a quality program in the Adventure area. The Adventure Activity Specialist is responsible for the safety and welfare of all campers participating in adventure activities.

General Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement quality adventure activities geared to the specific age group and ability level of the campers.
  • Organize and expand total program, developing activities with the goals and objectives of the program in mind.
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Full participation in orientation program with leadership role in adventure area.
  • Be aware of all safety rules and procedures. Make safety top priority in all activities.
  • Uphold all camp policies.
  • Be present at program meeting to:
    • Receive information about camper groups related to programming.
    • Work with program staff to develop a schedule of activities in the adventure area for the upcoming camper group.
    • Provide input for developing evening programs, all camp activities, and special events.
    • If available assist with clean-up of evening programs.
  • Be present at staff meetings to:
    • Work with other staff to ensure quality programming the in the adventure area.
  • Be present at scheduling meetings to:
    • Explain new activities and make needed announcements.
    • Double check counselor’s schedules each week.
  • Greet campers upon arrival and introduce them to their counselors.
  • Assist camper group to whom you are assigned:
    • With camper care.
    • During all mealtimes.
    • Any time during work hours that you are not organizing or leading camp activities.
  • Be a good resource person for adventure area.
  • Do cabin duty when required.
  • Fill in for counselors when required.
  • Communicate to Program Director/Assistant Program Director any concerns or ideas relating to camper problems, program activities or staff working relationships.
  • Perform other duties as assigned for the purpose of Camp Courageous and the service it provides.
  • Familiarize yourself as much as possible with campers’ individual backgrounds and needs by reading applications of campers before they arrive.
Additional Specific Responsibilities:
  • Plan at least six hours of adventure activities each day, Monday through Thursday. These include belaying for all high elements, maintaining safety as a number one concern.
  • Have schedule planned and posted by 2 PM each Sunday in the summer.
  • Organize and maintain supplies and equipment in the adventure closet.
  • Report equipment needs and repairs.
  • Write full season report on adventure program.
