Job description

George Jackson Academy
Advancement Coordinator

About GJA

George Jackson Academy (GJA), a small (85-95 students) all-boys independent middle school, grades 6-8, in New York City, seeks a highly organized, mission-driven Advancement Coordinator to support and drive all aspects of the school’s advancement efforts. Founded in 2003, GJA's mission is to help high-achieving boys from low-income and low-wealth backgrounds gain access to excellent high schools.

GJA graduates attend a mix of independent day & boarding schools, parochial schools, and specialized public schools in New York City and throughout the northeast. 100% of alumni graduate high school and 95% attend selective colleges and universities.

The Advancement Coordinator partners closely with the Director of Advancement and Advancement Associate. The role takes ownership of key operational functions, including database management, gift processing, donor stewardship, and event execution, while contributing to broader strategy and special projects. This is an in-person, full-time, 12-month position that reports to the Director of Advancement. The role will begin in August 2026.

The Role

The Advancement Coordinator is a critical role at the center of the school’s fundraising efforts, supporting both the strategic and operational functions of the Advancement team. Because GJA relies on philanthropy for approximately 90% of its operating budget, this role is central to sustaining and growing the resources that make the mission possible.

This position owns core systems and processes, manages the donor database (Raiser's Edge), and ensures a high-quality, consistent donor experience. The role serves as the primary liaison to the Associate Board and supervises the Advancement Associate on gift processing, stewardship workflows, social media execution, and student-facing engagement.

This role requires strong judgment, professionalism, and the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of constituents, including students, families, alumni, donors, and trustees.

Key Responsibilities
Database & Gift Administration
  • Serve as primary manager of Raiser's Edge, maintaining accuracy and integrity of all donor records. Oversee gift processing from receipt through acknowledgment, reconcile gifts with Finance, and supervise the Advancement Associate in stewardship workflows.
Advancement Operations & Annual Fund
  • Support forecasting, track performance against fundraising goals, and maintain strong day-to-day operational systems. Support annual giving campaigns, including segmentation, appeals, and donor outreach.
Events & Alumni Engagement
  • Coordinate donor cultivation events, school signature programs (Career Day, Mock Interview Day, graduation), and alumni gatherings. Oversee the student tour guide program and maintain alumni data in Raiser's Edge.
Board & Volunteer Engagement
  • Serve as primary liaison to the Associate Board — coordinating meetings, managing communications, and tracking member engagement. Support Board of Trustees engagement as needed.
Communications & Grant Support
  • Oversee advancement-related social media, website content, and donor communications via Constant Contact. Support the Director of Advancement with data and metrics for grant proposals and reports.
Qualifications
  • 2-4+ years of experience in nonprofit development, advancement operations, or database management
  • Required: Demonstrated proficiency in Raiser's Edge
  • Experience with Constant Contact, Canva, or similar tools preferred
  • Experience overseeing processes and/or supervising junior staff preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Comfort learning and adopting new software platforms and systems
Core Competencies & Attributes
  • Deep belief in and commitment to the mission and students of George Jackson Academy
  • Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy
  • Willingness to engage fully in the life of the school, including pitching in on day-to-day needs such as covering a class, supporting a field trip, or supervising recess when needed
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders—from students to board members
  • High level of discretion and ability to handle sensitive donor, student, and board information with confidentiality
  • Professional presence, sound judgment, and ability to navigate a dynamic environment with professionalism
  • Sense of humor
Additional Information
  • This is a fully in-person role with standard hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities for events
  • This role has an August 2026 start date
Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary range of $60,000 - $70,000
  • Full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, flex-spending, and commuter benefit accounts
