Our nursing will perform under this contract at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center (CRDAMC), Fort Hood, TX and may include any location under the hierarchy of CRDAMC to include West Fort Hood, TX; North Fort Hood, TX; Killeen, TX; Harker Heights, TX; and Copperas Cove, TX hereinafter referred to as CRDAMC Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs). Specific locations within CRDAMC MTFs will include Department of Inpatient Services such as, but not exclusive to cardiology, internal medicine, gastroenterology, neurology and Department of Medical Services such as but not exclusive to family medicine and pediatrics. Locations may include Department of Patient Support, Department of Surgical Services, or any MTF location under CRDAMC hierarchy.

NP Specialty Core Duties.
  • Prescribes for and treats a variety of gastrointestinal diseases, disorders, and injuries.
  • Knowledge of the medical, biological, and physical sciences related to gastrointestinal specialty area.
  • Knowledge of and skill to recognize emergency conditions to diagnose, prescribe for, and treat diseases, disorders, and injuries.
  • Perform routine physical examinations to the management of moderately complex acute and chronic illnesses in both outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Performs initial patient work-up and assessment of patient care and treatment.
  • Determines the need for and orders laboratory test, x-rays, and other procedures required to completely assess the patient.
  • Distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings to recognize early stages of serious physical, emotional, or mental problems.
  • Provides surveillance of adherence to established gastroenterology policies and procedures to stabilize chronically ill patients.
  • Adjusts regimens within established protocols recognizing when to refer the patient to the gastroenterologist or return to the patient’s primary care manager for other medical issues.
  • Make decisions concerning the gastroenterology needs of patients with physicians.
  • Works in collaboration with physicians in patient management evaluation and revision of therapeutic plans.
  • Completes all necessary outpatient record entries, progress notes, admission/discharge paperwork, and dictates narrative summaries (as required) and within CRDAMC MTF policies and regulations.
  • Ensures inpatient treatment documents and narrative summaries are countersigned by the attending physician.
  • Provides full range of emergency services or crises interventions in the absence of the physician including lifesaving emergency procedures.
  • Responsible for assigned panel of patients in the outpatient clinic.
  • Occasionally provides preceptorship and/or teaching for candidate physician extenders, students, residents, fellows, technicians, and volunteers. Submit all documents for signature, including preceptorship, to the government representative for signature. Contractor workers will not sign any documents representing the government.
  • As determined by department chief, or their designated government representative, may occasionally rotate shifts, transfer work location and/or clinics,
  • and/or be assigned to irregular tours of duty to include weekends, nights, and/or holidays, depending on area of assignment, increased patient workload, low patient census, staff surges or shortages, and government mission.
Requirements

Degree/ Education. Master’s degree in nursing (MSN) or doctoral degree (DNP). Graduate from an academic program, within the nursing specialty field of study that is accredited by a regional or national nursing accrediting agency recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Licensure. Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner.

Certification. Basic Life Support, Certified in the specialty as a Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) or the recognized national nursing certification organization for the specialty area of practice as appropriate (for example, National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses, American Nurses Association, National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Specialties).

Experience. Shall possess a minimum of three (3) years of post- education/graduate and post-licensure clinical experience within the last four (4) years practicing as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPCNP), or Acute Care NP (AGACNP) with recent hands-on advanced knowledge and experience related to gastrointestinal specialties and care to recognize emergency conditions to diagnose, prescribe, and treat diseases, disorders, injuries related to gastrointestinal care. Background shall reflect competency in conducting comprehensive evaluations, developing, and implementing treatment plans, prescribing medications, and coordinating care with multidisciplinary teams.
