Job description

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

Provide direct patient care within the Division of Infectious Diseases, delivering diagnostic and therapeutic services under physician supervision. ARNPs will exercise autonomy in medical decision-making and patient care, and may mentor healthcare students, residents, and fellows. They may also support research initiatives. The primary focus is on outpatient and inpatient Infectious Disease services at the Downtown Medical Campus and University Medical Campus, with approximately 75% of time at Jefferson Street and 25% at Main Campus.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide care as directed by a supervising physician for outpatient and inpatient Infectious Diseases patients, including:

  • Obtaining medical history, performing physical exams, and documenting accurately.
  • Evaluating and managing inpatients with medical or surgical issues, documenting assessments and plans. Communicating recommendations promptly to team members.
  • Managing common infectious disease syndromes following best practices.
  • Ordering, coordinating, and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic studies, including outside reports.
  • Providing independent and collaborative evaluation and management of outpatient infectious disease patients, including travel medicine.
  • Supporting quality patient care through orientation, staff programs, and CME activities.
  • Assisting in longitudinal patient care, including follow-up on labs.
  • Referring patients to specialists as needed.
  • Evaluating and responding to emergency medical problems.
  • Facilitating referrals and transitions of care.
  • Consulting with ID faculty on complex cases.
  • Admitting patients to the hospital when indicated.
  • Submitting accurate and timely charges for services.
  • Ordering medications for clinic patients; inpatient medications are ordered by referring providers.
  • Collaborating with other medical personnel in patient care.
  • Ensuring hospital compliance and maintaining patient confidentiality.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Supervision from the Infectious Diseases Division Director, Clinical Director, and/or APP Lead.

POSITION DETAILS

The department is hiring for one position as either an ARNP (requisition 25001389) or PA (requisition 25001390). Applicants should specify which position they are applying for or apply to both.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Master’s degree (preferably in Nursing); Baccalaureate in Nursing required if in a related field.
  • Current Iowa nursing license.
  • Current certification and licensure as ARNP in Iowa.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to establish rapport with patients and families.

Desirable:

  • Recent (within 3-5 years) clinical experience in infectious diseases.
