Job description

JOB SUMMARY Under close supervision, performs ultrasonic imaging examinations for patients in ANMC clinics.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES Performs ultrasonic imaging examinations according to Department procedures. Locates and records internal elements of the body, including blood vessels and organs, and identifies any anomalies indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant conditions. Performs ultrasound evaluations, including screenings, film interpretation, and level 3 obstetrical ultrasounds. Assists physician with invasive procedures.

Adjusts equipment and calms patient to eliminate test artifacts. Monitors the patient for potentially dangerous physical and emotional changes. Recognizes abnormal changes and immediately notifies physician. Evaluates test results for clarity and accuracy; reviews tests with peers. Informs physicians of preliminary findings as requested and according to Department procedures. Distributes completed test results to physicians and service providers. Maintains patient charts, enters diagnosis and billing codes, logs data into patient information systems, and updates file systems for tests performed.

Cleans and sterilizes equipment and work space. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and readjusts equipment or refers for repair. Trains and cross-trains other clinical staff as required. Instructs patients in pretest preparation, answers questions and explains procedures.

Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge of ultrasound imaging examination protocols and patient preparation for evaluation. Skill in interpersonal relationships. Skill in monitoring patient responses. Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications.

Required Experience

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATION An Associate's Degree in Diagnostic Ultrasound or related field. Progressively responsible work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for college education.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION Non–Supervisory - No experience required.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATION Current Basic Life Support card required. Registered Diagnostic Sonographer through ARDMS or be registry eligible and complete registry within one (1) year from date of hire.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS According to the needs of the organization, some incumbents in this job class may be required to obtain additional specific technical certifications. May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule. May be called out to work off-shift in emergency situations.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The following demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This position requires the ability to stand for long periods of time. Must be able to lift approximately 10 pounds. May be occasionally exposed to hazardous materials or infectious diseases. ANMC is not a latex free environment. Therefore, some latex exposure can be expected.
