Job summary

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring an Advanced Reactor Multiphysics Engineer to develop, deploy, and support innovative solutions across platforms including mobile, embedded, desktop, and web-based capabilities.

You will apply software engineering principles to complex analytical processes, leverage modeling and simulation, and address problems in nuclear applications and energy security. The role may mentor junior staff and contributes to INL's mission.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 2 years of relevant experience or an advanced degree in a related field
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of simulation codes including MOOSE-based applications and SCALE
  • Proficiency in Python and C++, Linux, Github, and LaTeX
  • Knowledge of verification, validation, and benchmarking principles
  • U.S. citizenship per DOE requirements

Responsibilities

  • Leverage modeling and simulation to address multiphysics problems across reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, and related fields
  • Execute computational analysis/modeling tasks and propose innovative solutions
  • Analyze, test, modify, document, and maintain simulation-based systems
  • Develop and review designs, requirements, operations, and testing processes
  • Optimize and develop software using C++ and Python
  • Perform multiphysics simulations of advanced reactor systems with sensitivity and uncertainty analyses
  • Verify and validate reactor physics tools for advanced reactors
  • Participate in international benchmarking efforts for advanced reactors
  • Provide consultation to internal teams on technology and testing
  • Deliver high-quality models, technical reports, and publications

Description

Idaho National Laboratory needs Advanced Reactor Multiphysics Engineer to develop, deploy, and support innovative technical solutions across platforms including mobile, embedded, desktop, and web-based capabilities supporting programmatic goals. You'll apply software engineering principles to complex analytical processes and information visualization, leverage modeling and simulation to address problems in nuclear applications, chemistry, digital twins, critical infrastructure, and energy security, and analyze, test, modify, document, and maintain simulation-based systems. Your work includes executing computational analysis tasks, developing and reviewing designs and requirement definitions, optimizing and programming software using MATLAB, Simulink, C/C++, Python, and similar technologies, and providing consultation services on applicable technologies and testing processes. You'll continuously enhance skills with cutting-edge technology, deliver high-quality features exceeding client expectations, and potentially mentor junior staff while advancing Idaho National Laboratory's mission in energy and national security.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Leverage modeling and simulation to address complex Multiphysics problems across multiple different fields. These fields include reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, thermos-mechanics, chemistry, digital twins, and machine learning.
  • Execute assigned computational analysis/modeling tasks and come up with innovative solutions to complex problems.
  • Analyze, test, modify, document, and maintain models or simulation-based systems related to scientific domains, including nuclear applications.
  • Develop and review designs, requirement definitions, operations, documentation, and testing processes.
  • Optimize, program, and develop software using appropriate technologies using C++ and Python.
  • Perform Multiphysics simulation of advanced reactor systems including reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, and fuel performance, with sensitivity and uncertainty analyses.
  • Perform verification and validation of reactor physics analysis tools relevant to advanced reactor systems.
  • Participate in international benchmarking efforts for advanced reactor systems.
  • Provide consultation services to internal teams in the areas of applicable technologies, requirement definitions, operations, and testing.
  • Delivering high quality product including models, technical reports, peer reviewed conference papers, presentations and journal papers.
  • Continuously enhance your skills with cutting-edge technology.
Required:
  • Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline from an accredited institution and 2 years of relevant experience; or an advanced degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge in simulation codes including MOOSE based application (Griffin, Pronghorn, SAM, BISON), SCALE (Shift, KENO, MAVERIC, ORIGEN, TSUNAMI), Monte Carlo codes (OpenMC, Serpent, MCNP, Shift).
  • Knowledge of Python and C++ programming, Linux, Github, and LaTeX.
  • Knowledge of verification and validation principles and benchmarking.
  • Applicants are subject to the requirements of DOE O 142.3B, Unclassified Foreign National Access Program and require that applicants have U.S. citizenship.

Physical Requirements:

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Advanced Reactor Multiphysics Engineer to work on our Reactor Physics Shielding team. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our REC facility with every other Friday off.

  • The pay range for this position is $79,344 - $162,732. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.
