Job summary

Momentive Technologies in Ohio seeks an Advanced R&D Engineer to help develop revolutionary high-temperature materials and scale advanced quartz, ceramic, and crucible technologies from bench concepts to full‑scale manufacturing. You will apply Six Sigma tools, manage pilot runs, perform design of experiments, and contribute to IP through patents and publications.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science & Engineering.
  • 5+ years of hands-on industry experience.
  • Experience with NPI Stage-Gate processes from concept to manufacturing transfer.
  • Experience transferring production scale equipment and processes to manufacturing.
  • Expertise in high-temperature processing equipment.
  • Proficient in statistical design and analysis of experimental data (DOE, hypothesis testing, Gage R&R).
  • Experience with Minitab or similar statistical software.]
  • Experience collaborating with manufacturing, suppliers, and customers to meet project objectives.

Advanced R&D Engineer

As an Advanced Research and Development Engineer, you'll support the development of revolutionary technologies, diving into the creation of advanced materials that will redefine possibilities.

Your role as a team member will support the introduction of groundbreaking products, providing invaluable support to our customers, and pioneering innovative high-temperature fusion processes. Not only will you help to bring these technologies to life, but you'll also play a crucial part in scaling up engineering processes - taking products from initial bench concepts to high-volume manufacturing reality.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop new quartz products and processes utilizing technical expertise to meet new market/application demands.
  • Lead new product introduction projects with cross-functional teams and external validation partners. Responsibilities include feasibility testing, prototyping, gauge development, pilot testing, cost analysis and scale up to manufacturing.
  • Apply project management skills in planning, budgeting, time management, resource allocation, and risk management.
  • Generate intellectual properties such as patents, publications, and internal reports
  • Responsible for manufacturing technical support regarding high temperature processing of ceramics, ceramics bonding and precision machining.
  • Apply Six Sigma methodology, statistical, surface and materials characterization tools for process improvement, failure analysis and troubleshooting.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Chemical Engineering or Materials Science & Engineering.
  • 5+ years of hands-on industry experience capable of contributing valuable insights immediately.
  • Knowledge and practical experience with New Product Introduction (NPI) Stage-Gate processes, including concept development, feasibility assessment, prototyping, validation, commercialization, and manufacturing transfer.
  • Experience developing, evaluating/refining at a pilot scale, and transferring production scale equipment and processes to manufacturing that generate revenue.
  • Expertise in working with and the design of high temperature processing equipment.
  • Proficient in statistical design and analysis of experimental data including design of experiment, hypothesis testing and Gage R&R.
  • Proficiency in materials characterization techniques (SEM, XRD, TGA, etc.) and quality/risk assessment tools such as FMEA.
  • Project management experience - effective planning and prioritization of projects of significant business impact to deliver new product/process technologies.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with manufacturing, suppliers, and customers to accomplish project objectives on time and within budget.
  • Experience managing CAPEX projects for new product introduction, process development, or manufacturing expansion, including business case development, cost justification, equipment procurement, factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), commissioning, and production ramp-up.
  • Ability to do hands-on work in an industrial environment with necessary PPE and interact and influence in a matrixed environment.
  • Experience working with statistical software such as Minitab.
  • A strong sense of accountability, urgency, and self-direction.
  • Ability to travel internationally 10%
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of hands-on industry experience capable of contributing valuable insights immediately.
  • Design and fabrication experience of pilot scale equipment and systems.
  • Expertise in working with and the design of high temperature processing equipment of quartz, glass, or ceramics.
  • Understanding of basic mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems involved in operation of batch and continuous furnaces.
  • Project management experience - effective planning and prioritization of projects of significant business impact to deliver new product/process technologies.
  • Experience with, or design of, quartz fusion processes including electric fusion, arc fusion and flame fusion.
  • Experience designing products for semiconductor processing equipment and familiarity with the semiconductor tool market.
  • Six Sigma training and/or certifications.
