The University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria (UICOMP) seeks candidates for the position of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the Department of Pediatrics.

The position is open for an APRN in pediatric hematology oncology to provide both outpatient and inpatient care for children with blood and cancer disorders. The role also includes staffing and providing care for pediatric patients receiving infusions and testing for non-pediatric hematology oncology cases in the pediatric infusion center.

Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides comprehensive health care for assigned patients/community as determined by scope of practice guidelines and specialty. This includes completion of a health assessment, determining diagnosis, planning and prescribing treatment within the parameters of medical staff privileges at the University of Illinois and area of expertise. The APRN participates in the educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other health care disciplines. The APRN is required to have and maintain a faculty appointment in order to receive clinical privileges to practice at the University of Illinois.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Manage the care of patients within assigned area and/or area of expertise and within parameters of medical staff privileges.
  • Obtain relevant patient health history. Study and interpret patient tests and records.
  • Perform physical exam and record findings.
  • Perform various diagnostic, preventive and/or therapeutic procedures and/or order special screenings and developmental or laboratory tests to diagnose conditions; interpret results.
  • Prescribe/order appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions and develop a treatment plan.
  • Develop an educational plan for patient/family.
  • Assist with scheduling of patients for upcoming procedures including coordinating with other services and completion of necessary documentation.
  • Order appropriate consultation/referral.
  • Determine effectiveness of treatment plan with documentation of treatment provided and patient outcomes.
  • Reassess and modify plan with patient/family and treatment team within the parameters of medical staff privileges.
  • Participate in educational experiences of nursing students, medical students, residents and other healthcare disciplines through case conferences, preceptor and mentor roles, and curriculum development.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects such as:
  • Managing care and oversight of patients receiving therapies and diagnostics at the pediatric infusion center at the Cancer and Blood disorder institute.
  • Managing pediatric oncology follow up for disease such as leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumor and benign hematological conditions including sickle cell disease both inpatient and outpatient.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice required.
  • Graduation from accredited APRN program.
  • Current license as a Professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice.
  • Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Infusion center background as nurse or APRN.
