Job summary

  • Federal DEA Registration to prescribe controlled substances is required.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and provide high-quality psychiatric and behavioral health care across RVCC locations.
  • Provide training, orientation, peer support, and guidance on medication management to staff.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and maintain licensure and regulatory compliance.

Position Summary:

The APRN at River Valley Counseling Center (RVCC) is responsible for coordinating and providing high-quality psychiatric and behavioral health care while ensuring clients are treated with dignity, respect, and confidentiality. The APRN also serves as a clinical resource for staff by providing training, orientation, peer support, and guidance on medication management. Additional responsibilities include participating in quality improvement initiatives, maintaining professional licensure and certifications, complying with RVCC policies and regulatory requirements, and working collaboratively across multiple RVCC locations. The position offers opportunities for professional growth within a supportive, team-oriented environment while maintaining client dignity, autonomy, and confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities:
  • To clinically coordinate client care, including, but not necessarily limited to, the following:
  • To review individual client treatment plans and clinical documentation periodically toassurethat client care requirements are met.
  • To collaborate with physicians to ensure effective communicationregardingmedications and patient treatment plans.
  • To act as a resource person for staff for clinical support as well as direction, to provide peer supervision to those individuals assigned by the Program Director and toestablishas well as run an APRN support.
  • To communicate regularly and clearly with clients, families,physiciansand other health care team members toassurecontinuity of care.
  • Toidentifycrisis situations and respond appropriately
  • To distinguish between normal and abnormal findings and to evaluate what findingsneedcollaboration or referral to appropriate allied professionals or community agencies.
  • To develop a plan of care based onidentifiedneeds and problems and to provide follow-up on clients treated, as may be necessary.
  • Toassistinidentifyingpotential safety/health risks, ofindividualclientsand ensureappropriateandtimelycounseling.
  • To conduct case management reviews with multi-disciplinary team and community agencies, as necessary, toparticipatein or contribute to continuing client care plans involving clients managed by outside providers.
  • Toinitiateand/or complete required documentation ina timely, systematic,accurateform; to include age related assessment of biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, age-specific, and educational factors
  • To competently provide care to clients, including, but not limited to the following:
  • To explain the procedures or treatment plans according to the age and level of comprehension of each client.
  • To provide care in a manner that respects the adult client’s dignity, autonomy, and independent decision-making.
  • To include, whenappropriate, assessment data from the client’s significant other/responsible person.
  • To review assessment data obtained by other clinical disciplines, including diagnostics.
  • To promptly reassess needs whenwarrantedby the client’s condition.
  • To assess substance abuse issues and history, including acute withdrawal symptoms.
  • To assessriskof suicide and dangerousness to others.
  • To assess mental status.
  • To act as a client advocate to ensure that clients’/families’/significant other’s needs are incorporated into theplancare.
  • To develop/initiate orassistin developing/initiatingthe treatment plan for each assigned client withinappropriate timeframes, in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary treatment team.
  • To involve the client/significant other/health care agent in planning care asappropriate.
  • To include discharge planning needs on multi-disciplinary treatment plans.
  • To provide treatment interventions that are age-specific, asdesignatedin the treatment plan, to meet the client’s/family’s or significant other’s needs.
  • To provide education to client/family/significant other/health careagentspecific to client’s healthcare needs and level of comprehension.
  • To implementphysician’sorders accurately and withinexpectedtime frame.
  • To take a leadership role in supporting clinical staff in interventions with clients in crisis, clients in need ofhigher levelcare (e.g.medical detox), or clients who appear not tobe benefitingfrom treatment.
  • Tofacilitategroups, as needed.
  • Toparticipateactively in the quality improvement process and incorporate quality improvement findings into clinical proactive and coordination of client care in the department. To also be involved in any administrative meetings as a representative of the medical staff.
  • To coordinate and provide orassistin providing orientation for new nursing and/or clinical staff.
  • To review and reorder medical supplies within approved budgetary limits.
  • To keep current with public and mental health licensing and regulatory requirementsregardingmedication clinics.
  • To updateappropriate RVCCstaff, as necessary, about proper regulatory procedures for medication clinics.
  • To develop andmaintainproficiencyin using RVCC’s computerized client information systems accurately and effectively.
  • To be proficient with the use of RVCC’s interpretiveservicesaccessappropriate service(s)toeffectively meet the needs of the clients being served.
  • To work at multiple sites serviced by RVCC, as assigned or directed.
  • Toutilizetactful, direct, and sensitive interaction skills in promoting positive customer relations and interpersonal relationships at all levels within and outside the organization. TorepresentRVCC, both within and outside the organization, in a positive, professional manner.
  • To communicate effectively with clients with various cultural backgrounds.
  • To encourage questions in a friendly, helpful manner and to answer in clear, age-appropriate language.
  • To treat each person as an individual.
  • To collaborate with immediate supervisor inidentifyingownstrengths and weaknesses in an on-going evaluation process, to keep supervisor informed of activities within area of responsibility and to communicate needs ona timelyand routine basis.
  • Tomaintainand improve current knowledge through self-directed study and/or participation in on-going professional development programs
  • Tomaintainown license incurrent status, as required by law,retaina copy of such license on premises
  • To use time constructively and organize work for maximumproductivity.
Qualifications:
Required:
  • Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse (RN) License(issued by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing)
  • National APRN Certificationin theappropriate specialty(e.g., Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner through the ANCC)
  • Massachusetts APRN Authorization(recognition as an APRN by the Board of Registration in Nursing)
  • Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration (MCSR)issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health
  • Federal DEA Registrationto prescribe controlled substances
Preferred:

Five or more years’ experience as a clinical nurse specialist; experience working with chronically mentally ill populations required, experience or desire to work with pediatric patients and bilingual (Spanish/English) ability a plus.

  • Salary Range:$187,200-$208,000

Based on years of experience, level of education, specialty and licensure/certifications. Additional Compensation for advanced education for qualifying positions.
