Job description

Summary:
Under the medical supervision of the Urology Residency Site Director or delegated urologic physician and administratively under the Administrative Director of the MIUI, performs a variety of duties related to the care and management of pre- and post-operative urology patients. Works collaboratively within a team environment supporting the academic mission to train urology residents. All essential functions performed in this position address the age-specific needs of patients.

Responsibilities:
  1. Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  2. Serves as an active member of the MIUI service line, attending shared governance meetings and other subgroups as required to achieve the goals of The Miriam Hospital and Brown University Health.
  3. Collaborates closely with urology residents to coordinate patient care needs daily.
  4. Obtains, records, and maintains detailed medical histories and physical examinations; documents all pertinent patient information in medical records.
  5. Assists in preparing discharge summaries and initiates life-saving measures in emergencies.
  6. Initiates patient admission orders as directed by physicians, following hospital procedures.
  7. Assesses patient status and participates in developing care management plans through communication with interdisciplinary team members.
  8. Attends and actively participates in daily collaborative care rounds.
  9. Performs credentialed procedures such as urethral catheter insertion/removal, cystoscopy, suture or staple removal, blood gas draws, IV insertions, NG tube insertions, intracavernosal injections, and irrigation for priapism.
  10. Evaluates and manages patients presenting with urology issues in the Emergency Room.
  11. Provides wound care, including cleaning, debridement, and dressing changes.
  12. Enters orders into Lifechart as needed and assists with research projects when requested.
  13. Provides daily patient care, including education for nursing staff and during pre-operative sessions.
  14. Participates in surgical service educational activities and completes annual urology training requirements.
  15. Performs other related duties as required.
Additional Information:

Basic Knowledge: Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program with an MS degree, certified by the ANA or AANP with prescriptive privileges, including narcotics, or a Physician Assistant with a master's degree and NCCPA certification. Must have completed AHA BLS/ACLS courses.

Experience: Experience in general urology, surgery, and ER procedures is preferred but not required.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements: Involves working with medical equipment, direct patient contact, potential hazards mitigated by safety procedures, standing/walking intermittently, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

Independent Action: Performs independently within broad departmental policies, consulting only for clarification as needed.

Supervisory Responsibility: None.
