Advanced Practice Provider, Pediatric Development Program

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is credentialed by the medical staff and functions within their scope of practice in their jurisdictional area and in accordance with organizational medical staff bylaws. They are responsible for providing evidence-based care for the management of patients, including assessment, implementation, and evaluation of a detailed plan of care, which incorporates diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. The APP demonstrates competency in providing age-appropriate care to patients as defined by certification and training and provides family centered care to meet family needs, including psychological support, education and discharge planning in conjunction with other related disciplines.

The APP initiates, participates and collaborates with divisional and organizational multi-disciplinary staff to provide and support evidence-based education, quality improvement and research. They participate in professional and organizational activities that contribute to improving patient care, the scientific knowledge base of advanced practice, program operation, and individual professional development. The APP provides leadership within their respective clinical area through participation in division projects and mentorship of others. They contribute to department and organization wide initiatives, representing advanced practice and promoting the role of the advanced practice provider.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

Master's Degree Nurse Practitioner – Master’s or Doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner from an accredited program and eligibility for medical staff credentialing required.

Physician Assistant – Master’s or Doctoral degree of Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program and eligibility for medical staff credentialing required.

Clinical Nurse Specialist – Master’s or Doctorate degree in the clinical specialty area in which they practice from an accredited program and eligibility for medical staff credentialing required (Required).

Minimum Work Experience

0 years of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider (Required).

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Nurse Practitioner – Licensure in the state(s) of clinical practice, CDS in state(s) of clinical practice, DEA (Required) or Physician Assistant – Licensure in the state(s) of clinical practice, CDS in state(s) of clinical practice, DEA (Required) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Clinical Nurse Specialist – Licensure in the state(s) of clinical practice; if prescribing controlled substances: CDS in state(s) of clinical practice, DEA (Required) or Nurse Practitioner – Active national certification with governing body such as PNCB, ANCC, or AANPCB; BLS certification (Required).
  • Physician Assistant – Active national certification with NCCPA; BLS certification (Required).
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) (Required).
Functional Accountabilities

Clinical

  • Assesses, diagnoses, and monitors clinical status of each patient using evidence-based practice and medical knowledge.
  • Develops appropriate plan of care.
  • Writes patient care orders, prescribes therapy, and provides necessary home care orders as needed.
  • Identifies significant changes in patient status using physical exam, lab values, diagnostic tests, and patient/family input.
  • Differentiates between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Performs procedures as needed after obtaining appropriate credentialing.
  • Participates in and/or leads multidisciplinary patient care.
  • Is a clinical resource for patient, parents, and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Appropriately communicates and escalates clinical/administrative issues.
  • Collaborates with nursing, medicine, and other members of the healthcare team to regularly ensure quality patient care.

Administrative

  • Serves as a clinical preceptor to NP, CNS or PA students.
  • Acts as a clinical resource for staff in patient care issues.
  • Provides formal/informal educational presentation to staff on areas of expertise.
  • Participates and leads quality improvement initiatives in their department.
