Position Overview: UNC Endocrinology's adult inpatient Diabetes Care Team is seeking per diem NP/PAs to cover vacant shifts. APPs participate in all phases of diabetes management during hospitalization, including profiling new patients and readmissions for endocrine consults, performing comprehensive assessments and physicals, ordering, conducting, and interpreting diagnostic tests, formulating diagnostic impressions, developing and implementing treatment plans, monitoring therapeutic interventions, prescribing pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, and providing counseling and education to meet patient needs, with documentation of patient care conducted independently.

Summary: This role supports primary healthcare physicians in diagnosing, planning, and dispensing medical treatment. The APP practices alongside a supervising physician who holds ultimate responsibility.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist with surgical procedures, including prepping and draping patients, intraoperative assistance such as vein and artery harvest for bypass, and wound management.
  2. Perform clinical duties independently in accordance with established policies, assist physicians, and act as a liaison within the team.
  3. Prescribe medications as permitted by departmental protocols and state regulations.
  4. Handle administrative tasks like reviewing patient charts, assisting with conferences, coordinating tests, and managing protocols collaboratively with the healthcare team.
  5. Engage in educational, research, and quality assurance activities, including training of staff and students, and participating in research projects.
  6. Plan comprehensive patient care, including treatment courses, ensuring continuity and discharge planning, conducting history and physicals, and ordering diagnostic tests.
  7. Provide direct patient care, assist in surgical procedures, manage wound care, and handle equipment and prostheses as needed.
Other Information

Education Requirements: Completion of an accredited graduate-level APRN or PA program.

Licensure/Certification Requirements: Licensed as an APRN or PA in North Carolina, with appropriate certifications and DEA license.

Professional Experience: No prior experience required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Demonstrated clinical competency, leadership, strong interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively, and proficiency in documentation.
