Diagnose And Manage Common Dermatologic Conditions Including Acne vulgaris

The Dermatology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) delivers comprehensive outpatient dermatologic care across the lifespan, managing acute and chronic skin conditions while performing office-based dermatologic procedures. The APP functions within a collaborative practice model with physician oversight and mentorship, progressing from structured supervision to independent management of a designated patient panel over a 12-18 month training period.

The APP evaluates, diagnoses, treats, and manages patients with a broad range of medical dermatologic conditions including, but not limited to, acne vulgaris, acne keloidalis nuchae, psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, eczema, hair loss/thinning hair disorders, lentigines, seborrheic keratoses, cherry angiomas, solar purpura, skin tags, epidermal cysts, and other common dermatologic concerns. Responsibilities include performing dermatologic procedures, educating patients, coordinating care, and contributing to clinical quality and operational excellence.

This position will be Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm. It will include eight four-hour patient facing sessions. This position supports two practice locations: UVA MC Primary Care Center and Zions Cross Roads Dermatology. There are no weekends or holidays worked. There is opportunity for training with board certified dermatologists, who support progressive growth to independent practice.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior dermatology experience, dermatology fellowship, or related medical/surgical specialty experience. Experience in outpatient procedural care. Interest in developing expertise in medical dermatology and office-based dermatologic procedures.

I. Administrative Responsibilities
  • Complete timely and accurate clinical documentation.
  • Maintain compliance with institutional, departmental, regulatory, and payer requirements.
  • Manage patient communications, prescription requests, prior authorizations, and results follow-up.
  • Participate in schedule optimization and patient access initiatives.
  • Support quality, safety, and performance improvement activities.
  • Maintain procedural competency and credentialing requirements.
  • Utilize resources responsibly and contribute to operational efficiency.
I. Clinical Responsibilities
Patient Assessment & Management

Conduct comprehensive dermatologic evaluations through history, physical examination, and diagnostic assessment.

Diagnose And Manage Common Dermatologic Conditions Including
  • Acne vulgaris
  • Acne keloidalis nuchae
  • Psoriasis
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa
  • Eczema/atopic dermatitis
  • Hair loss and scalp disorders
  • Lentigines
  • Seborrheic keratoses
  • Cherry angiomas
  • Solar purpura
  • Skin tags
  • Epidermal cysts
  • Other benign and inflammatory skin disorders
  • Conduct new patient consultations and follow-up visits.
  • Develop individualized evidence-based treatment plans.
  • Prescribe and manage topical, oral, injectable, and biologic therapies consistent with scope of practice.
  • Monitor treatment efficacy, adverse effects, and patient adherence.
  • Provide patient education regarding diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and long-term disease management.
Procedural Responsibilities

Perform and maintain competency in outpatient dermatology procedures including:

  • Comprehensive skin examinations and lesion evaluation
  • Shave biopsies
  • Mole/benign lesion removal
  • Skin tag removal
  • Cryotherapy
  • Epidermal cyst excision/removal
  • Wound assessment and management
  • Initiation and monitoring of dermatologic treatment regimens
  • Other office-based procedures as credentialed and approved
Care Coordination
  • Collaborate with dermatologists and multidisciplinary care teams.
  • Coordinate specialist referrals when indicated.
  • Ensure appropriate follow-up and continuity of care.
  • Utilize EMR tools to support efficient clinical workflows and documentation.
IV. Professional Responsibilities
  • Practice within APP scope of practice, professional standards, and institutional policies.
  • Demonstrate accountability, integrity, professionalism, and patient-centered care.
  • Maintain active licensure, certification, and prescribing authority.
  • Complete required continuing medical education and dermatology-specific training.
  • Participate in departmental educational conferences, journal clubs, and case reviews.
  • Maintain competency in emerging dermatologic therapies and treatment guidelines.
  • Foster an inclusive, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
  • Serve as an advocate for patients and families.
Emerging Leadership (Months 6-18)
  • Actively participate in departmental initiatives and team improvement efforts.
  • Contribute to clinical pathway development and standardization efforts.
  • Support onboarding and orientation activities for new team members.
  • Participate in quality and patient experience initiatives.
Independent APP Leadership (12-18 Months and Beyond)
  • Serve as a clinical resource for APP colleagues and staff.
  • Mentor learners, students, new APPs, and rotating providers.
  • Participate in departmental committees, workgroups, and strategic initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve access, quality, efficiency, and patient outcomes.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and continuous professional growth within the team.
Minimum Requirements
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree.
  • Experience: Department and unit specific.
  • Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.

The pay range for this role is $116,123.00 - $171,163.20 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
