Job description

The Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) will work as a member of the UVA Health Perinatal Mental Health care team, providing behavioral health services to patients in an ambulatory clinic setting. The BHC provides triage assessment, diagnostic and developmental evaluations, individual and group therapy, referral assistance, crisis intervention, and mental health screenings. Prior experience with treating women in the perinatal period is preferred.

Responsibilities:
  1. Provide direct social work services to patients, families, and groups, assisting with social and practical environmental problems.
  2. Offer emotional support to patients and families, especially those experiencing anxiety and stress related to illness and hospitalization.
  3. Conduct interventions based on initial assessments.
  4. Advocate for patient and family wishes when appropriate.
  5. Support patients and families emotionally during hospitalization.
  6. Educate patients and families on intervention purposes as needed.
  7. Inform care team of post-discharge needs of patients and families.
  8. Maintain knowledge of resources to ensure continuity of care before and after discharge.
  9. Participate in in-service and staff development activities, including attending planning committees and offering educational topics.
  10. Document all relevant activities in accordance with UVA, social work policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  11. Engage in education and research activities.
  12. Serve as a liaison between the hospital, outside agencies, legal authorities, and referral sources.
  13. Conduct individual counseling and problem-solving sessions as needed.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Details:

Compensation Range: $57,907.20 - $92,643.20 annually

Minimum Requirements:
  • Master's degree in Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program.
  • At least 3 years of post-master's experience.
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia LCSW within 18 months of hire.
Physical Demands:

Sitting for prolonged periods, standing, traveling, climbing stairs; proficient communication, auditory, and visual skills; ability to lift/push/pull less than 20 lbs; exposure to chemicals, blood, body fluids, and infectious diseases.
