WVUHS Medical Group seeks a GI APP. The successful candidate will practice inpatient and outpatient GI in Wheeling, WV.

Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) has coordination and clinical skills required for the comprehensive management of gastroenterology patients, including biological, social, and psychological assessments. The APP coordinates involvement of medical specialty teams necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient and reviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinical team, participates in directing that care, performs diagnostic/therapeutic procedures and coordinates disposition decisions and discharge planning/follow-up as applicable. The APP participates in the education of residents and medical/nursing students.

This is a 5-day-a-week position.

Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and the requirements of the professional licensing or certification authority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable. Such service may include but are not limited to.

Minimum Qualifications – Nurse Practitioner

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure

• Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’s Degree in Nursing

• ACNP or FNP certification preferred

Minimum Qualifications – Physician Assistant

Education, Certification, and/or Licensure

• Bachelor’s Degree as Physician Assistant or Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant required
• Graduate of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant training program required
• Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants required
• Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine
• American Heart Association BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department

Experience

• Internal Medicine, gastroenterology or hepatology experience preferred

Core Duties and Responsibilities

• Manages comprehensive and individualized care for gastroenterology/hepatology patients and their families immediately post-discharge and in the ambulatory setting
• Completes consults and/or pre-procedure/evaluations
• Performs integrated assessments regarding management and comprehensive medication reviews for disposition of gastroenterology/hepatology patients
• With collaboration of gastroenterology/hepatology faculty or by following established clinical guidelines and protocols, orders additional tests or consults as deemed appropriate
• Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice
• Communicates with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings
• Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in the medical record
• Facilitates patient disposition by coordinating appropriate services and tests for follow-up appointments in the clinic or location of necessary care arrangements
• Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for gastroenterology/hepatology patients, including teaching, disposition planning and necessary referrals
• Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum of their educational experience and certification
• Identifies unstable or complex gastroenterology/hepatology patient care situations and facilitates intervention if appropriate in the clinic setting
• Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effective emergency care
• Evaluates gastroenterology/hepatology patients and coordinates follow-up in the ambulatory setting or longitudinal facility as applicable
• Assists in the collection of outcome measures
• Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision making
• Utilizes equipment safely
• Bases decisions on scientific principles and established standards of care
• Educates nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families and the community
• Promotes an environment that supports learning and responds to patient/family preferences and readiness to learn
• Updates knowledge base throughout the year
• Completes all identified clinical competencies
• Serves as a resource for staff caring for gastroenterology/hepatology patients
• Provides educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel
• Participates in community programs and distribution of literature related to area of expertise
• Documents plan of care and interventions in the medical record following hospital policies
• Collaborates with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome improvements
• Provides leadership for changes in gastroenterology/hepatology practice that improve outcomes
• Works with medical and nursing staff to solve problems and provide professional support
• Participates in interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development and education
• Promotes and practices innovation in the expanded role for gastroenterology/hepatology care across inpatient and ambulatory settings
• Participates in committees and task forces
• Documents hours and submits billing reports where appropriate
• Reviews and interprets hepatology data and recommends changes as needed
• Participates in clinical trials and research studies when applicable
• Assists hepatology faculty and administrators in outcome measurement
• Other duties/projects as assigned
