Job summary

Rush University Medical Center, a nationally recognized clinical and academic institution and the teaching hospital for Rush Medical and Nursing Colleges, located in downtown Chicago, invites applications for the position of Primary Care Service Line APP Manager.

The Manager, Advanced Practice Providers (APP) – Primary Care Service Line is a licensed Physician Assistant (PA) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) responsible for the leadership, operational oversight, and management of APPs across the Primary Care service line. The Primary Care Service Line includes APPs practicing across multiple geographic regions, specialties and care settings. APPs currently support family medicine, internal medicine and other primary care practices throughout the system, with leadership responsibilities distributed among regional- and discipline-specific Lead APPs. This role would provide leadership and oversight for APP practice across the Primary Care Service Line while maintaining a clinical presence to remain connected to frontline operations and patient care.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will promote collaboration between multiple disciplines to ensure cost effective and quality patient care. Successful candidates will also meet all other state and federal regulatory practice and accreditation standards.

Responsibilities
  • APP workforce planning, recruitment, onboarding, and retention
  • Performance management and professional development
  • Oversight of staffing, scheduling, and clinical deployment
  • Advancement of quality, operational, and patient care initiatives
  • Development and optimization of APP practice models across primary care services
  • Provides direct oversight, coordination, and management of APPs across the primary care service line
  • Partners with primary care physician, nursing, and operational leadership to establish and execute strategic clinical and operational priorities
  • Collaborates with primary care leadership teams to ensure seamless integration of APP practice across all primary care settings
  • Supports expansion and optimization of APP practice models to improve patient access, throughput, continuity of care, and operational efficiency within the service line
  • Serves as direct manager for APPs and Lead APPs within the primary care service line
  • Oversees APP recruitment, onboarding, credentialing, privileging, orientation, and retention initiatives
  • Manages APP performance evaluations (annual and ongoing OPPE/FPPE), competencies, and professional development planning
  • Develops, maintains, and enforces APP policies, procedures, workflows, and best practices specific to primary care delivery
  • Resolves escalated staffing, performance, and employee relations concerns
  • Participates in budget development, resource allocation, productivity management, and fiscal oversight for APP operations within the service line
  • Attends and contributes to primary care leadership, faculty, and operational meetings; ensures regular communication forums for APPs across the service line
  • Develops and monitors service line goals, productivity standards, patient access metrics, and quality outcomes
Clinical Practice
  • Maintains active clinical practice within the primary care service line to support clinical competency and model evidence-based primary care
  • Completes and documents accurate histories and physical examinations
  • Conducts comprehensive and episodic assessments and develops patient care plans
  • Orders, interprets, and manages diagnostic testing, therapies, and treatment plans within scope of practice
  • Prescribes medications, including controlled substances, as delegated and appropriate within scope of practice
  • Provides accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate care transitions and specialty referrals
Leadership & Strategy
  • Serves as a liaison between APPs, physicians, nursing, care management, and administrative leadership within the service line
  • Develops and sustains an environment that promotes excellence in APP practice, care delivery, and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Facilitates APP engagement, mentorship, satisfaction and retention initiatives
  • Participates in strategic planning efforts to align APP workforce contributions with service line and organizational goals
  • Evaluates and evolves APP staffing and care delivery models to optimize patient outcomes, provider efficiency, and operational performance
  • Supports leadership development and succession planning among APP team members
  • Continuously evaluates the effectiveness of APP workforce models and implements operational improvements as needed
Education
  • Develops, oversees, and promotes continued learning and professional growth among APP staff within the line
  • Coordinates APP student rotations, APP fellowship/residency opportunities, and academic partnerships
  • Encourages continuing education, specialty certification maintenance, and lifelong learning among APPs
  • Promotes participation in research, quality improvement and evidence-based practice initiatives
  • Pursues ongoing professional development to remain current on trends, innovations, and best practices in primary care medicine and APP leadership
Qualifications
  • Minimum of five years of Advanced Practice Provider experience primary care related specialty is required
  • Leadership/management experience is preferred
  • Preference to candidates with experience leading in an academic medical center
  • This role reports directly to the Director of Advanced Practice Providers and has an indirect reporting relationship to the Primary Care Service Line leadership team
  • Demonstrated expertise in primary care, APP practice management, and interdisciplinary collaboration strongly preferred
Position Requirements
  • Nurse Practitioner:
  • Current licensure from the State of Illinois as a Registered Professional Nurse and Advanced Practice Nurse or eligible to obtain a licensure through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) application process
  • Master of Science in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing practice with clinical specialty appropriate to position
  • Current certification by American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioner (AANP)
  • BLS certification
  • Physician Assistant:
  • Current licensure from the State of Illinois as a Physician Assistant/Associate or eligible to obtain a licensure through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) application process
  • Successful completion of an accredited Physician Assistant/Associate Program
  • Current certification from National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants
  • BLS certifications

Pay Range: $190,000 - $245,000

Rush offers competitive total compensation that includes base pay, benefits, and other incentive programs for our employees. The total pay range shown reflects the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, specialty; relevant experience and training; and other business and organizational factors. This total pay range is for a full-time, 1.0 FTE employee, and includes any incentive payments that may be applicable to this role. Additional compensation may include premium pay rates, sign-on bonuses, and relocation allowances. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package.
