Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Assess and manage acute surgical patients, develop treatment plans with residents and attending physicians.
  • Perform bedside procedures, wound care, drain placement/removal.
  • Coordinate care with surgeons, intensivists, residents, and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Monitor patient status and interpret labs and imaging to guide treatment.
  • Educate families and document care accurately in EMR.
  • Provide clinical leadership and participate in staff education.
  • Pursue quality improvement and ongoing education.

Short Description

Advanced Practice Provider (APP) - Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Acute Care Surgery

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Assessment & Management: Perform comprehensive assessments of acute surgical patients, develop and implement treatment plans, monitor progress, and adjust care as needed in collaboration with resident and attending physicians.
  • Critical Care Procedures: Perform bedside procedures such as suturing, drain placement/removal and wound care management.
  • Coordination of Care: Work closely with surgeons, critical care intensivists, surgery and medicine residents, and the multidisciplinary team to coordinate care.
  • Patient Monitoring: Continuously evaluate patient condition, monitor vital signs, and interpret lab results, diagnostic imaging, and other data to guide treatment decisions.
  • Family Communication: Provide education and emotional support to patients' families, ensuring they are well-informed about the patient's condition, treatment options, and prognosis.
  • Clinical Documentation: Maintain detailed and accurate electronic medical records (EMRs) of patient care, including assessments, treatments, interventions, and outcomes.
  • Leadership & Education: Serve as a clinical leader through nursing staff education and contribute to the training of students and residents as needed.
  • Continuous Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiativesand continuing education to stay current with best practices in emergency surgery care.

Skills:Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities. Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Work Environment: Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.

Experience Required

Minimum 2-3 years of experience in surgery, trauma, emergency medicine, or critical care settings preferred.

Education Requirements

Master's Degree - Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is required

License/Certification Requirements

Board certification Nurse Practitioner and Acute Care certification or Board certification as Physician Assistant; Active New Jersey License; American Heart Association BLS and CDS/DEA
