Job summary

Cooper University Health Care in Camden, NJ, is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) for Acute Care Surgery. You will perform comprehensive assessments and develop treatment plans in collaboration with residents and attendings.

Key duties include critical care procedures, coordination of care with surgeons and the multidisciplinary team, ongoing patient monitoring, and clear communication with families.

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant; NJ license.
• Board certification as NP or PA; Acute Care certification.
• 2–3 years of experience in surgery, trauma, emergency medicine, or critical care.

Responsibilities

• Assess and manage acute surgical patients, develop treatment plans with residents and attending physicians.
• Perform bedside procedures, wound care, drain placement/removal.
• Coordinate care with surgeons, intensivists, residents, and the multidisciplinary team.
• Monitor patient status and interpret labs and imaging to guide treatment.
• Educate families and document care accurately in EMR.
• Provide clinical leadership and participate in staff education.
• Pursue quality improvement and ongoing education.

Short Description

Advanced Practice Provider (APP) - Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Acute Care Surgery

Key Responsibilities:

• Patient Assessment & Management: Perform comprehensive assessments of acute surgical patients, develop and implement treatment plans, monitor progress, and adjust care as needed in collaboration with resident and attending physicians.
• Critical Care Procedures: Perform bedside procedures such as suturing, drain placement/removal and wound care management.
• Coordination of Care: Work closely with surgeons, critical care intensivists, surgery and medicine residents, and the multidisciplinary team to coordinate care.
• Patient Monitoring: Continuously evaluate patient condition, monitor vital signs, and interpret lab results, diagnostic imaging, and other data to guide treatment decisions.
• Family Communication: Provide education and emotional support to patients' families, ensuring they are well-informed about the patient's condition, treatment options, and prognosis.
• Clinical Documentation: Maintain detailed and accurate electronic medical records (EMRs) of patient care, including assessments, treatments, interventions, and outcomes.
• Leadership & Education: Serve as a clinical leader through nursing staff education and contribute to the training of students and residents as needed.
• Continuous Improvement: Participate in quality improvement initiativesand continuing education to stay current with best practices in emergency surgery care.

Work Environment: Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.

Experience Required

Minimum 2-3 years of experience in surgery, trauma, emergency medicine, or critical care settings preferred.

Education Requirements

Master's Degree - Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant is required

License/Certification Requirements

Board certification Nurse Practitioner and Acute Care certification or Board certification as Physician Assistant; Active New Jersey License; American Heart Association BLS and CDS/DEA
