Job summary

University Health Associates seeks an Advanced Practice Professional in Orthopaedics (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to coordinate comprehensive orthopedic care. The APP will work with physicians, nurses, and staff to assess, diagnose, and treat patients across emergency, inpatient, and ambulatory settings.

The role emphasizes peri-operative care, discharge planning, and education of residents and students. WV licensure eligibility and BLS is required.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a CCNE-accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
• National Certification by APRN Certification Centers.
• Licensure or eligibility for licensure as an APRN in West Virginia.
• BLS Certification required with ALS as needed by department.
• For First Assists, RNFA certification may be required.

Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY :

The Advanced Practice Professional(APP) has coordination and clinical skills required for thecomprehensive management of orthopaedic patients, (includingbiological, social and psychological assessments). The APPcoordinates involvement of medical/surgical specialty teamsnecessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient, andreviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinicalteam, participates in directing that care, performsdiagnostic/therapeutic procedures, peri-operative services, andcoordinates discharge planning/follow-up (as applicable). The APPparticipates in the education of residents and medical/nursingstudents.

Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and therequirements of the professional licensing or certificationauthority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable. Suchservice may include, but are not limited to.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR NURSE PRACTITIONER :

• 1. Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’sDegree in Nursing

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• 1. Manages comprehensive and individualized care for orthopaedicpatients and their families in the emergency department, inpatientphase of hospitalization, immediately post discharge and in theambulatory setting.
• 2. Completes daily rounds; consults and/orpre-procedure/evaluations (as applicable). With the collaborationof orthopeedic faculty or by following established clinicalGuidelines and Protocols, orders additional tests or consults asdeemed appropriate. Consultations may take place in the EmergencyDepartment or inpatient wards.
• 3. Completes integrated assessments. Participates in peri-operativeprocedures which includes (but is not limited to) first assistingon cases in the operative suite.
• 4. Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests followingestablished clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
• 5. Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staffregarding abnormal findings in the evaluations of patients.
• 6. Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations andconsultations; documents findings in medical record.
• 7. Facilitates patient discharge by coordinating appropriateservices, tests supportive equipment prior to discharge necessaryfor outpatient follow-up appointments in the clinic (asapplicable).
• 8. Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care fororthopaedic patients, which includes teaching, perioperativeplanning. discharge planning and necessary referral to othermembers of the health care team as necessary.
• 9. Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the agecontinuum of their educational experience and certification.
• 10. Identifies unstable or complex orthopaedic patient caresituations and facilitates appropriate intervention in the clinicand/or hospital setting.
• 11. Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effectiveemergency care.
• 12. Evaluates orthopaedic patients and serves as a coordinator forfollow up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting (asapplicable).
• 13. Assists in the collection of outcome measures (asapplicable).
• 14. Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skillsin clinical decision making by the identification, evaluation andmanagement of the individual needs of patients/families.
• 15. Demonstrates the ability to utilize equipment in a safemanner.

• 29. Promotes and practices innovation of the expanded role in thedelivery of care to orthopaedic patients and families in theemergency department throughout inpatient hospitalization,perioperative phase and the ambulatory setting.
• 30. Participates and provides leadership for committees and taskforces.
• 31. Documents hours and submits billing reports, asappropriate.
• 32. Reviews and interprets orthopaedic data from sources such aspatient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay,access to care, and cost per case reports and recommends/implementschanges as necessary.
• 33. Participates in clinical trials and research studies with thePrincipal Investigator.
• 34. Assists orthopaedic Faculty, Administrators and Directors inthe collection of outcome measures.
