Job summary

The Indian Health Service seeks a Nurse Practitioner to deliver compassionate care to American Indian and Alaska Native communities. You will assess patients, interpret histories and diagnostics, and develop evidence-based care plans.

You will diagnose and treat acute conditions, prescribe appropriate medications, educate patients for self-management, and participate in ongoing quality improvement in rotating shifts.

Qualifications

• Graduate or higher-level degree in nursing from an accredited program.
• Current, active, unrestricted RN license; advanced practice nursing requires a specialty license.
• At least one year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to the next federal grade level.
• Successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment.
• Must meet U.S. citizenship, Selective Service registration (where applicable), and E-Verify eligibility.

• Develop treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines.

• Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, dosage, and frequencies.
• Educate patients about self‑management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to individual circumstances.

Qualifications

• Education: Graduate or higher‑level degree in nursing or an advanced practice specialty from an accredited program recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• Licensure: Current, active, unrestricted RN license; advanced practice nursing positions require a specialty license appropriate to the clinical area.
• Experience: At least one (1) year of specialized nursing experience equivalent to the next lower federal grade level (e.g., GS‑10 for GS‑11). Experience may include private or public sector roles.
• Background Investigation: Successful completion of a federal background investigation as a condition of employment.
• Other Requirements: Must meet U.S. citizenship, Selective Service registration (for applicable candidates), and federal E‑Verify eligibility. Conditions of employment include probationary period, rotating shifts, and on‑call duties as outlined by the position.
