Job description

Carpenter Technology Corporation is a leading producer and distributor of premium specialty alloys, including titanium alloys, nickel and cobalt based superalloys, stainless steels, alloy steels and tool steels. Carpenter's high-performance materials and advanced process solutions are an integral part of critical applications used within the aerospace, transportation, medical and energy markets, among other markets. Building on its history of innovation, Carpenter's wrought and powder technology capabilities support a range of next-generation products and manufacturing techniques, including novel magnetic materials and additive manufacturing.

Principal Purpose of Position:

A technically curious engineer who enjoys experimentation, data analysis, and solving difficult detection challenges. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable working in a laboratory, around production inspection systems, and behind a computer analyzing large volumes of ultrasonic data. Someone who is motivated by pushing the limits of defect detection and redefining what is possible in ultrasonic inspection technology.

Research & Technology Development
  • Design, execute, and analyze experimental programs focused on improving immersion ultrasonic inspection sensitivity.
  • Develop and validate novel ultrasonic testing methodologies capable of detecting increasingly smaller defects and inclusions.
  • Investigate advanced technologies including focused immersion probes, phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), FMC/TFM imaging, multi-probe systems, and differential signal processing techniques.
  • Evaluate emerging NDT technologies and benchmark performance against industry best practices.
  • Plan and conduct laboratory and production-scale experiments using immersion ultrasonic systems.
  • Analyze ultrasonic signals using advanced statistical, mathematical, and digital signal processing techniques.
  • Develop algorithms and data analysis methods to improve signal-to-noise ratio and defect characterization.
  • Utilize software tools such as Python, MATLAB, Minitab, or equivalent platforms for data analysis and modeling.
  • Establish detection thresholds and quantify capability for critical defect sizes.
  • Work with equipment suppliers and internal stakeholders to evaluate new probes, transducers, instrumentation, and scanning systems.
  • Design test methods, calibration standards, and validation procedures for new inspection technologies.
  • Support installation, integration, and optimization of experimental and production ultrasonic equipment.
  • Recommend future technology investments and equipment roadmaps.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Manufacturing, Metallurgy, Product Development, and Process Engineering teams.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in ultrasonic testing and NDT technologies.
  • Develop technical reports, presentations, specifications, and standard operating procedures.
  • Support intellectual property generation through invention disclosures, patents, and technical publications.
  • Candidate must obtain Carpenter UT Level 3 certification within 2 years of start date.
Qualification & Commercialization
  • Validate inspection methodologies for aerospace, automotive, medical, energy, and other critical applications.
  • Develop technical specifications and acceptance criteria for next-generation inspection processes.
  • Support transfer of successful technologies from R&D into production environments.
Education and/or Training:
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, NDT Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Metallurgy, ultrasonic testing, NDT, signal processing, materials characterization, or experimental engineering.
  • Experience designing and executing technical experiments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with statistical analysis and data interpretation.
  • Knowledge of ultrasonic wave propagation, flaw detection, and inspection system calibration.
  • Proficiency with data analysis tools such as Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or Ph.D. in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
  • ASNT Level II or Level III certification in Ultrasonic Testing.
  • Experience with immersion ultrasonic testing systems.
  • Experience with phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), FMC, or Total Focusing Method (TFM).
  • Knowledge of signal processing, machine learning, or AI applications in NDT.
  • Experience inspecting bars, billets, forgings, aerospace alloys, or specialty metals.
  • Familiarity with ASTM, AMS, Nadcap, aerospace, or medical material inspection requirements.
  • Patent, publication, or technology commercialization experience.
