Job description

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) serves as a Medical Support for Patient Aligned Care Team and has the ability to fully perform the duties/functions related to all aspects of the full performance Advanced Medical Support Assistant, GS-0679-06 position in Columbia and its Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) under the Patient Aligned Care Team.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
  • a. Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States (U.S.). Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens according to 38 U.S.C. § 7407(a).
  • b. Experience. None.
  • c. Education. High school diploma, General Education Development equivalency certificate, or proficiency certificate from a State or territorial-level Board or Department of Education. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: GS-6 Preferred Experience: Prefer 1 year of healthcare experience. (b) Assignment. The Medical Support Assistant (MSA) at this grade level is at the Advanced level. The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (MSA) works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model (Patient Aligned Care Team) and/or Specialty clinics as assigned. The AMSA at this level works independently and is considered the chief source of patient information and plays an important role in accomplishing the administrative work within the outpatient clinics by the duties listed below

  • 1. Scheduling appointments in accordance with VHA Directive 1230 and VHA Directive 1232 (2); including canceling, re-scheduling, and no showing patient appointments and/or consults.
  • b. Track and managing of consults (active/pending), Recall List (Delinquent), Return to Clinic Order Query from ISS (Integrated Scheduling Solutions), CTM (Consult Tracking Manager), VISTA (Vista R-3) for accurate dispositioning daily.
  • 2. Responsible for same day actions of all consult management for the facility to include running DST (Decision Support Tool) through the accurate use of the consult toolbox.
(c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Candidates must demonstrate all of the KSAs below:

  • i. Ability to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines (e.g. medical doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, clinical pharmacists, and nursing staff) to accomplish team goal setting to ensure medical care to patients is met.
  • ii. Ability to independently set priorities and organize work to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations.
  • iii. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively, electronically, by phone, in person, and in writing, with internal and external customers. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels, as well as resolving patient concerns.
  • iv. Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process (including, but not limited to, scheduling across interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community models and patient health care portals) as it relates to access to care.
  • v. Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community operational activities that affect patient flow, and patient support care administrative functions to include, but not limited to appointment cycles, outside patient referrals, follow-up care, overbooking, provider availability, etc.
  • vi. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians.
