Job description

Summary

This position is located in the Core Laboratory of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Program at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center. The Medical Technician is responsible for performing a wide range of emergency, routine, complex, and specialized test procedures in Clinical Chemistry, Coagulation, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and Urinalysis with minimal on-site supervision. These procedures range from basic screening tests to DNA amplification.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Education: Candidates must meet the applicable educational requirements for certification.
• Certification: Candidates must currently possess one of the appropriate certifications as an MLT granted by organizations such as the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists, or the American Association of Bioanalysts.

Grade Determinations: GS-07 Advanced Medical Laboratory Technician (Above Full Performance Level): Experience must include at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level, demonstrating specific KSAs including laboratory procedures, equipment operation, and knowledge of safety regulations, among others.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to experience, candidates must demonstrate KSAs related to laboratory technology principles, applying scientific developments, independent work, troubleshooting, laboratory IT systems, safety regulations, and quality management.

Assignments: MLTs at this level have higher responsibility, including performing advanced blood banking, microbiology, molecular testing, and quality management activities. They may act as key operators for specific instrumentation and perform duties independently at remote sites.

Physical Requirements: The work involves standing, walking, sitting, manual dexterity, visual and color acuity, lifting, and working in a noisy environment, among other physical demands.
