Qualifications

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline (sciences, tech, engineering or math).
  • 3+ years of mechanical design/analysis experience in turbomachinery components.
  • 3+ years of FEA experience with ANSYS/APDL/Mechanical or equivalent.
  • Fluent in reading/writing/speaking English.

Responsibilities

  • Design rotating and static turbomachinery components (rotors, stators, blisks, disks, impellers).
  • Perform modal, vibration, deflection, fatigue, thermal and stack analyses with FEA.
  • Support testing and data reduction for engines/modules across life cycle stages.
  • Create documentation of engineering results and present at design reviews.
  • Contribute to mentoring, process/tool improvements, and knowledge capture.

Job description

As an Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer (Fan and Compressor Mechanical), here at Honeywell Aerospace, you will be part of a team responsible for the mechanical design, simulation, analysis and test of fans and compressors (FanC) in gas turbine engine (turbomachinery) applications within Honeywell Aerospace Engines and Power Systems. You will collaborate closely with our FanC team at the Phoenix Engines site.

You will report directly to our Engineering Manager, and you'll work out of the Puerto Rico (Aguadilla) location. External hires will work onsite for the initial 90 days before transitioning to a hybrid work schedule.

The Advanced Mechanical Design Engineer (Fan and Compressor Mechanical), will support currently fielded products and contribute towards development of new products for a variety of turbofan, turboshaft and auxiliary power unit (APU) applications. You will apply principles of design, physics, mathematics and software development to perform a broad variety of engineering tasks. Also, you will be expected to contribute to continuous improvement of design, analysis and simulation methods.

Key Responsibilities within Fan and Compressor team
  • Perform activities related to mechanical design of rotating and static turbomachinery components such as rotors, stators, blisks, disks and impellers
  • Execute design and analysis tasks including modal, vibration, deflection, crack growth, burst, fatigue, thermal and stack analysis with Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Support testing of components and engine modules in various lifecycle stages (rig, development, production) and perform data reduction/analysis on test data
  • Generate documentation capturing engineering results and findings following design, simulation, analysis and test activities
  • Develop and present engineering artifacts during structured design reviews
  • Contribute to technical mentoring, process/tool improvement and knowledge capture

Travel, up to 15%, domestic and/or international, can be expected.

MUST HAVE
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as the sciences, technology, engineering or mathematics
  • 3 or more years of combined experience in the mechanical design and analysis of turbomachinery components
  • 3 or more years of combined experience in Finite Element Analysis with ANSYS APDL, ANSYS Mechanical, or an equivalent FEA software package
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently
WE VALUE
  • M.S. or PhD in aerospace or mechanical engineering
  • Experience with AI/ML, adjoint optimization, surrogate modeling and multidisciplinary optimization
  • Experience with MATLAB, Python and C++ scripting
  • Knowledge of turbomachinery test methodologies such as strain gages, light probes and kulites
  • Familiarity w/ manufacturing, product support, and field support of gas turbine engines
  • Problem solving proficiency w/ root cause analysis (RCCA)
  • CAD modeling experience (e.g. NX, UG, SolidWorks, CATIA) and ability to read drawings
