Job summary

Serco is hiring an Advanced Mechanical Assembler to support U.S. Navy shipboard installations in Norfolk, VA. You will read blueprints, assemble electromechanical assemblies, and perform maintenance to keep equipment operational.

Requirements include a high school diploma, DoD Secret clearance eligibility, OSHA certification, respirator qualification, forklift certification, and at least 5 years of shipboard experience. Willingness to travel up to 10% and work extended shifts is expected.

Qualifications

• Able to access NAVSTA & DBIDS and pass background/drug screening.
• OSHA certification required.
• Respirator qualification and PPE use throughout shift.
• Forklift certification required.

• 5+ years shipboard experience in related field.
• Read drawings (beginner) and follow blueprints.
• Able to work overtime and shifts as needed; travel up to 10%.
• Safety-focused with ability to navigate shipyard environments.

Serco is looking for Advanced Mechanical Assemblers to join a high-profile and challenging project supporting the US Navy in Norfolk, VA.The Advanced Mechanical Assemblers will be on a dynamic team, supporting our C5ISR system installations. Bring your expertise and collaborative skills to make an impact towards our military defense and safety of our Sailors.

SERCO supports the U.S Naval Ships with military and system installations. You will be part of a team that works closely with the customer and other Serco team members to deliver high technology performed onboard U.S. Naval Ships and military installations.

In this role, you will:

• Follow blueprints, guidelines, and/or diagrams to fabricate and assemble various electromechanical and electronic assemblies.

• Keep equipment operational by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions and reporting malfunctions.

• Perform work with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within field.

• Rely on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

• Work onboard U.S. Naval Ships and military installations in an area that is somewhat uncomfortable due to drafts, noise, temperature variation

• Work with equipment where carelessness would probably result in minor cuts, bruises, muscle strains, serious injury, or death

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• A High School Diploma or equivalent

• The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance

• The ability to obtain and gain access to shipyards (NAVSTA & DBIDS), undergo a background investigation and pass a drug screening.

• The ability to obtain an OSHA certification.

• The ability to get respirator qualified and wear proper PPE throughout their work shift.

• The Ability to obtain Forklift certification.

• A minimum of 5 years of experience using power tools, assembling both large scale and intricate mechanical assemblies.

• The ability to obtain a Firewatch and Cable Installer certification.

• A minimum 5 years of Shipboard Experience in a related field.

• A combination of experience in the following areas:

• Read drawings (Beginner)

• Drill holes, cut metal, shoot studs & use torque wrench (without supervision)

• Assist with HAZMAT control & safety

• Ability to bolt/unbolt cableways, deck plates & equipment

• Operate light machinery/equipment

• Position, join, align, wrap & seal pipe & conduit sections

• Carry equipment & clean spaces

• Remove lagging & paint

• Ability to follow directions of senior employees

• Experience with reading drawings. (Beginner level)

• Demonstrated ability to working with blueprints, assembly drawings and sketches in completing a wide variety of assembly and subassembly tasks.

• Experience in the fabrication and precision assembly of various mechanical assemblies.

• The ability to work second, or thirds shift as needed and willing to work more than 40 hours work weeks.

• The ability to work high heat spaces, climb shipyard dry dock stairs/ladders, work in

kneeling position for layout of cable runs under false decking, lift 50 pounds with 80% of work requiring carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 40 pounds for majority of shift while being in a standing, crouching, or walking position.

• Attention to safety (which is critical)

• The willingness to travel up to 10% to various work sites.

• The ability to work in Newport News, VA.

Additional desired experience and skills:

• Active DoD Secret clearance

• OSHA 10 certification

Salary range: The hourly amount for this position can be found at the top of this posting. This role is covered by the Service Contract Act.For positions on this contract, we will pay the prevailing wage rate for the location in which the employee is working, as determined by the Department of Labor and the Wage Determination (WD). The wage rate will vary depending on the locality.
