Job summary

BayCare is seeking an Advanced Inpatient Coder Specialist (PRN, remote in FL) to ensure accurate inpatient records across multiple service lines. You will review complex encounters, collaborate with physicians, and support MS-DRG assignment and quality reviews.

The role requires CCS certification, 5+ years of acute care experience, and a remote FL residency. PRN schedule aligns with 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM shifts and flexible scheduling.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of acute care experience
• 3+ years of inpatient coding experience
• CCS certification is required
• RHIT is preferred
• High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree preferred in Health Information Technology

Responsibilities

• Analyze complex inpatient documentation to assign accurate ICD-10-CM/PCS codes.
• Collaborate with physicians and clinical teams for accurate coding of complex conditions such as sepsis and malnutrition.
• Create and manage physician queries and monitor bill hold reports.
• Partner with Clinical Documentation Specialists and Quality teams for accurate MS-DRG assignment and PSI/HAC reviews.
• Apply advanced knowledge of anatomy, pathophysiology, and pharmacology to coding accuracy.
• Mentor and support junior coders and students as needed.
• Perform additional duties as assigned

What You’ll Do

As an Advanced Inpatient Coding Specialist, you will play a key role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of inpatient medical records. You’ll work across multiple high-acuity service lines—including Orthopedics, Neurology, Cardiac, General Surgery, and Trauma—reviewing complex, multi-day encounters.

Key responsibilities include:

• Analyzing complex inpatient documentation to assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS
• Collaborating with physicians and clinical teams to ensure accurate coding of complex conditions such as sepsis and malnutrition
• Creating and managing physician queries and monitoring bill hold reports
• Partnering with Clinical Documentation Specialists and Quality teams to support accurate MS-DRG assignment and PSI/HAC reviews
• Applying advanced knowledge of anatomy, pathophysiology, and pharmacology to support coding accuracy
• Mentoring and supporting Coder I–III team members and students as needed
• Completing additional duties as assigned

What We’re Looking For

• Experience:
  • 5+ years of acute care experience
  • 3+ years of inpatient coding experience
• Certification:
  • Required: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
  • Preferred: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
• Education:
  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Preferred: Associate degree in Health Information Technology
