Description of Work Unit: The CSU Veterinary Health System (VHS) exists to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community 24/7/365. The Imaging Core within the VHS houses academic, research, continuing education, modern equipment, and clinical programs that address the promotion of animal and human health. Position Summary: Provide a contributing role to the technological aspects of animal and human imaging research projects and provide expertise in research application using CT, Nuclear Medicine, and MRI. Work with researchers on advancing technologies and innovative imaging techniques using both software and hardware developments. Perform clinical imaging with high and low field MRI, helical and cone beam CT, PETCT, and nuclear medicine on animal patients. The technologist is primarily responsible for the development of protocols based on discussion with clinical or research faculty. The Advanced Imaging Technologist will provide service to the clinical animal advanced imaging section (CT, MRI, NM, and PET/CT) while assisting with technological aspects of clinical animal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), Nuclear Medicine (NM), and positron emission tomography (PET/CT) imaging. Supporting animal and human imaging research projects is expected.

This is an essential worker position and must be willing and able to report to work as directed to perform essential and/or emergency services without delay or interruption.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

A signing bonus and/or moving expenses may be considered for eligible and successful candidates.

Required Job Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in a health, life science, or related field plus one (1) years of advanced imaging experience
OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in a health, life science, or related field plus three (3) years of advanced imaging experience
OR
  • Associates degree in health, life science, or related field plus five (5) years of advanced imaging experience
OR
  • High School Diploma (or GED) plus seven (7) years of relevant advanced imaging experience
And
  • Current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (CT) certification with a member in good standing status
  • Good computer skills and familiarity with networking, PC-based database and spreadsheet programs, word processing, and image-viewing software

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • MR ARRT certification
  • Previous experience with MRI, multi-slice CT, PET/CT, and/or Nuclear medicine is highly desired.
  • Equine and/or large animal handling experience is highly desired
  • Previous experience in a veterinary medical setting
  • Demonstrated history of working well in a team environment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills working with personnel at all levels in a hospital setting (faculty, administration, staff, clinicians, and trainees)
  • Experience with radiopharmaceutical handling, patient injection, radiation safety protocols, and monitoring.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are highly desired.

Job Duty Category: Scheduling

  • Schedule imaging studies and oversee advanced imaging calendar of use;
  • Organize and coordinate clinical and research work flow with other areas of the VTH;
  • Perform complex image post-processing, analyze CT, NM, and MR images with viewing and analytical software;
  • Utilize digital image management systems including Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and Radiology Information System (RIS), image data archival, and reports;
  • Crosstrain and provide imaging support as needed in MRI, PETCT, and Radiology;
  • Schedule and maintain consistent preventative maintenance plan for equipment
  • Serve as technical liaison to other departments within the VTH;
  • Communicate with industry and scientist user groups.

Job Duty Category: Communication

  • Ensure daily communication with the imaging unit and VTH and TMI.
  • Develop new protocols and procedures in advanced imaging to optimize animal imaging for clinical and research applications based upon the stated objectives of the clinicians and researchers with minimal oversight from radiologists;
  • Manage imaging databases and data from animal studies;
  • Maintain/oversee proper care and sanitation of the advanced imaging suites;
  • Maintain programs of advanced imaging quality assurance and quality control;
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of advanced imaging equipment as well as identify and investigate maintenance and service contracts as approved by the Service and Section Chiefs;
  • Identify vendors and assist in the negotiation of major equipment purchases;
  • Monitor inventory on a monthly/yearly basis, and investigate best prices;
  • Aid in the conduct of prospective research and retrospective case studies, including participation in the literature review, data collection and manuscript preparation for publications and grants;
  • Manage, organize, coordinate and assist with cost accounting in research projects.
  • Lead contact for radiation safety protocols and nuclear medicine examinations at the VTH and JFEH.

Job Duty Category: Educational Tasks

  • Educational tasks to include, but not be limited to:
  • Organize and gather materials for educational CT, NM, PET-CT, and MRI imaging rounds;
  • Provide formal and informal presentations on safety and technical
  • Supervision of hourlies and professional imaging staff housed in the VTH and TMI on aspects of NM, CT, PET-CT, and MRI to faculty, residents, other personnel, and students;
  • Conduct clinical and research CT, and PET-CT studies for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) student education;
  • Participate in NM, MRI, CT, and/or PET-CT research meetings.
