Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline such as science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
  • Minimum 5 years aerospace engineering experience performing problem-solving investigations with hands-on lab analysis.
  • Experience with metallographic preparation, metallurgical evaluation, SEM/EDS, and NDT.
  • Knowledge of corrosion, fracture mechanisms, and materials processing.
  • Experience with mechanical testing such as hardness and tensile testing valued.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth investigations into causes of aerospace component failures.
  • Perform laboratory investigations including sectioning, preparation, photography, microscopy, SEM/EDS.
  • Establish direct causes and collaborate on root-cause corrective actions.
  • Analyze metallurgy and part performance under operational conditions.
  • Report to Mechanical Design Engineering Manager and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

Job description

  • Conduct in-depth investigations into the causes of aerospace component failures using advanced engineering principles and team-based methodologies
  • Perform laboratory investigations including part sectioning, sample preparation, photography, microscopy, and SEM/EDS evaluation
  • Establish direct causes of failed components and collaborate with engineering teams to determine root causes and corrective actions
  • Analyze the relationship between metallurgy and part performance under operational conditions
  • Use knowledge of material and process failure phenomena to determine component failure causes
  • Articulate component failure mechanisms using detailed product-functionality knowledge
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to solve problems and improve engineering processes
  • Follow standardized Material Engineering Component Investigation processes and expectations
  • Maintain laboratory facilities, equipment, and consumables, including capital planning for current and future needs
  • Report to the Mechanical Design Engineering Manager
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
  • Minimum 5 years of Aerospace Engineering experience performing problem-solving investigations requiring hands-on laboratory analysis techniques
  • Experience with metallographic preparation, metallurgical evaluation, SEM/EDS, and NDT
  • Deep understanding of corrosion mechanisms specific to aerospace components and subsystems
  • Knowledge of fracture mechanisms
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering valued
  • Experience in metallic component failure analysis, metallurgy, and materials processing, including heat treatment, thermomechanical processing, and fusion welding valued
  • Experience with mechanical testing methods such as hardness and tensile testing valued
  • Familiarity with standardized engineering investigation processes and best practices valued
  • Experience resolving production process problems in aerospace metals products valued
  • Experience with aerospace design requirements definition, drawings, and specifications valued
  • Experience maintaining laboratory equipment and inventory valued
  • Must be a U.S. Person: U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, protected status under asylum or refugee status, or able to obtain export authorization
