Job description

Summary

The Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT)/ Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) position is primarily responsible for implementing and directing the Medical Center's Radiation Safety Program. The role involves applying conventional methods to control radiation hazards. The radiation safety officer ensures that the facility complies with all procedures and regulations related to the safe use of radiation.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements
  1. United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable, in accordance with VA Policy.
  2. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology - Radiography (ARRT) (R).
  3. Education: Completion of a 24-month (or equivalent) post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or associate degree, accredited by JRCERT or recognized agencies by the DOE.
  4. Grandfathering Provision: Employees in VHA as of the standard's effective date are considered qualified if their competence was affirmed by a VA licensed physician before 1987.
  5. Grade Determinations: For GS-10, at least one year of related experience demonstrating specific competencies, including knowledge of radiation protection standards, advanced imaging software, physics, patient positioning, and others.
Physical Requirements

The physical demands include heavy lifting, moderate carrying, pushing, reaching, dexterity, prolonged standing and walking, bending, rapid coordination, visual and auditory requirements, and emotional stability. Ability to wear a lead apron for extended periods is necessary.

Duties
  1. Perform daily inspections of radiographic units for mechanical functionality.
  2. Maintain records for quality assurance, quality control, and performance improvement.
  3. Conduct quality control testing and report findings.
  4. Coordinate preventive maintenance scheduling.
  5. Ensure compliance with standards and regulations, including Joint Commission and VA standards.
  6. Work with physicists for safety compliance and acceptance testing of new equipment.
  7. Provide training to staff technologists and personnel.
  8. Manage activities related to VistaA downtime events and contingency plans.
  9. Lead the Radiology Quality Improvement Committee.
  10. Interact with regulatory agencies regarding radiation safety laws.
  11. Review and update safety manuals annually.
  12. Perform CT imaging and related procedures, including dose optimization and image quality.
  13. Assist with PACS administration and coding updates.
  14. Work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
