Job summary

The Pennsylvania State University’s Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) seeks a proactive Communications and Signal Processing Engineer to join our team. You will develop, test, and evaluate advanced signal processing algorithms and communication techniques, modeling PHY protocols, and prototyping capabilities using software-defined radios and open-source tools.

This role involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, field tests, sponsor engagements, and potential to upgrade security

Qualifications

  • Technical background in communications and signal processing (e.g., waveform design, detection/estimation, protocol development, or channel modeling)
  • Experience with simulation/analysis tools such as MATLAB or Python
  • Ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary, team-oriented environments
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher (potential to upgrade clearance)

Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and evaluate advanced signal processing algorithms and communication techniques
  • Model and simulate PHY protocols and waveforms
  • Prototype communication capabilities using SDRs and open-source tools
  • Contribute to waveform, modulation, and algorithm design for challenging environments
  • Perform system-level analysis and performance assessments
  • Document findings and present results to sponsors
  • Participate in field tests and stakeholder engagements
  • Collaborate with ARL and government sponsors
