Basic Purpose
Positions in this job family are responsible for providing direct and indirect non-professional nursing care or outreach services in various settings under nursing or medical supervision. Duties include taking vital signs, obtaining lab specimens, charting, escorting patients, assisting with activities of daily living, and managing supplies.

Typical Functions

  • Performs direct nursing tasks such as taking vital signs, assisting with daily activities and hygiene, and obtaining lab specimens.
  • Charts observations and activities, reporting changes in patient condition.
  • Performs delegated or specialized functions as trained.
  • Escorts patients to destinations.
  • Maintains a clean, safe environment.
  • Manages supplies and performs clerical tasks.
  • Participates in follow-up activities, schedules appointments, and tracks clients.
  • Engages in case finding and recruitment of at-risk persons for health services.

Level Descriptor
This is a specialist level responsible for more complex patient care tasks and advanced duties.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Competencies
Requires effective communication in English, knowledge of public health, record keeping, nursing practices, sanitation, and medical terminology. Ability to record observations, follow directions, establish relationships, apply nursing techniques, and assess situations accurately.

Education And Experience
Requires two years of experience in patient care.

Physical Requirements

  • Vision: Adequate to perform patient care, read labels, and record data.
  • Hearing: Adequate to utilize communication systems and hear patient requests and alarms.
  • Speech: Clear and audible communication.
  • Mobility: Able to stand for long periods, walk, bend, kneel, reach, lift up to 25 pounds, and assist with patient mobility, including transfers.
  • Environment: Able to work with chemicals involved in the job.
  • Administrative Duties: Able to sit for extended periods if assigned.
  • Job Assignment: Flexible to work on any unit or shift, including floating to other units.

Special Requirements
This position is safety sensitive as defined by 63 O.S. 427.8. Certification as a CNA or CMA-A by the Oklahoma State Department of Health is required depending on the level.
