Job summary

Sparklight, a Cable One brand, seeks an Advanced Technician to install, repair, and troubleshoot customer equipment and networks. You will diagnose faults in Headend, HFC, and fiber systems, read design maps, and ensure compliant, reliable service.

The role requires field work with variable schedules, including overtime, and the ability to work with both aerial and underground plant. Training provided by Sparklight after joining.

Qualifications

  • One-year certificate from college or technical school; or three to four years related experience and/or training.
  • Must successfully complete Sparklight Technical Training Center Advanced Technician course within 6 months of accepting position.
  • Knowledgeable of FCC, NEC, NESC, OSHA, and DOT regulations, plus local ordinances.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license for the state of employment.
  • Ability to work variable schedule and respond to service interruptions; overtime including weekends/evenings/holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions in Headend, HFC and fiber optic networks.
  • Repair customer-owned equipment and maintain high-quality connectivity.
  • Read and interpret system/network design maps and verify as-built documentation.
  • Splice/terminate coaxial and fiber optics cables; activate devices; test for optimal performance.
  • Perform underground facility locates to prevent cable damage.
  • Monitor plant for signal leakage and perform ride-out activities as needed.
  • Train system technical personnel as directed by local system management.

What you will do to contribute to the company’s success
  • Keeping high quality connectivity is key to Sparklight. You will maintain high level service by troubleshooting and diagnosing malfunctions in the Headend, HFC and fiber optic networks, and the Home Terminal Units.
  • Supporting our customers by repairing both local plant performance issues and customer-owned equipment, using electronic test equipment.
  • We are always growing and working to better our services. You’ll be reading and interpreting system/network design maps. Verifying as built documentation; Comparing findings in the field with existing documentation and reporting findings following Company standard process.
  • Splicing and/or terminating coaxial and fiber optics cables, mounting active and passive devices, both aerial and underground (cabinets and vaults), activating actives devices and testing to ensure optimal performance of all equipment in the HFC/fiber optic plant to Company, manufacturer, and design specifications.
  • Performing surveys to determine if customer-requested locations are capable of receiving service. Creating maps/drawings as necessary to assist in estimating costs for plant/drop extensions if location is beyond acceptable distance from existing plant.
  • Performing underground facility locates accurately using plant maps and electronic locating equipment in order to prevent cable damage and service interruptions.
  • Performing construction maintenance duties as necessary including: splicing aerial/underground coaxial and/or fiber optic cables and equipment to restore cable plant to system specification; splicing and activating new coaxial plant; repairing and/or replacing damaged aerial/underground plant; and inspecting, repairing and/or replacing power supplies.
  • Continuously monitoring plant for ingress/egress and performs signal leakage ride-out activities and tracks and repairs signal leakage, as necessary.
  • Training system technical personnel as directed by local system management.
Qualifications
  • One-year certificate from college or technical school; or three to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must successfully complete Sparklight Technical Training Center Advanced Technician course within 6 months of accepting position.
  • A working knowledge of signal level meters, volt-ohm meters (VOM), leakage detection equipment, time domain reflectometer (TDR), optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) and other related test equipment.
  • Knowledgeable of rules and regulations of various regulatory bodies impacting the operation of a telecommunications system including, but not limited to, FCC, NEC, NESC, OSHA, and DOT, as well as all local ordinances.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license of the state in which the individual is employed.
  • The position requires the ability to work a variable schedule and respond to service interruptions during regular business hours, shift work or when on-call. Must be available to work overtime including weekends, evenings, and holidays as required.
