Advance Practice Provider – Cardiothoracic Surgery

Job Summary: The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as an expert within a defined scope of practice and performs selected tasks and services in collaboration with Cardiothoracic Surgeons. Under physician supervision, the APP plans, directs, and provides patient care for cardiothoracic patients, offers first assist in the operating room, and provides direct primary care in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Cardiothoracic Surgeons to oversee multidisciplinary care for all cardiothoracic patients.
  • Provide operating room coverage including first assist, endoscopic vein harvest, and radial artery harvest.
  • Perform ICU rounding and coverage.
  • Conduct floor rounding, consults, and discharges.
  • Provide office/clinic coverage for preoperative consults and postoperative follow-ups.
  • Offer primary care to all cardiothoracic patients, including assessment, evaluation, diagnosis, and development of treatment plans.
  • Notify the attending physician as outlined in the Collaborative Practice Agreement.
  • Monitor guidelines for patient management and ensure services comply with JPS Health Network and Acclaim Physician Group standards.
  • Participate in the cardiothoracic call schedule as defined by the department.
  • Assist in the operating room for elective, urgent, and emergent adult cardiac and thoracic surgeries as instructed.
  • Attend quality improvement and team meetings as instructed.
  • Maintain own licensing and credentialing, including all required certifications.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications

Education & Training:

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program OR Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) with RNFA certification.
  • 2+ years of cardiothoracic surgery OR experience as an advanced practice provider with first assist in the OR.

Licensure & Certification:

  • Current unrestricted licensure to practice as required by the State of Texas.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; may obtain within 60 days of hire and maintained current throughout employment.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification; may obtain within 60 days of hire and maintained current throughout employment.
  • Completion of unit-specific competency-based orientation program within 90 days of hire.

Experience:

  • 5+ years of cardiothoracic surgery OR experience as an advanced practice provider with first assist in the OR preferred.
  • Proficiency or willingness to develop skills in intra-aortic balloon pump insertion/removal, pacer management/pacing wire removal, endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting, Swan-Ganz insertion and removal, radial artery harvest, and chest tube placement preferred.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Knowledge of advanced cardiothoracic surgical techniques and care management within the specialty area.
  • Knowledge and understanding of customer service principles.
