Advance Practice Provider – Cardiothoracic Surgery

Job Summary

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as an expert within a defined scope of practice and performs selected tasks and services in collaboration with Cardiothoracic Surgeons. The position practices under the supervision of the supervising physician to plan, direct, and provide patient care for cardiothoracic patients. The APP offers first assist in the operating room and provides direct primary care to patients in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Cardiothoracic Surgeons in overseeing and coordinating the multidisciplinary care delivered to all cardiothoracic patients, inpatient and outpatient, to optimize quality patient care.
  • Provide operating room coverage including first assist, endoscopic vein harvest, and radial artery harvest.
  • Perform ICU rounding and coverage.
  • Perform floor rounding, consults, and discharges.
  • Provide office/clinic coverage for preoperative consults and postoperative follow‑ups.
  • Provide primary care to all cardiothoracic patients including assessment, evaluation, diagnosis, and development of treatment plan.
  • Notify the attending physician as outlined in the Collaborative Practice Agreement.
  • Monitor guidelines for the management of patients and ensure that services are delivered in compliance with the guidelines established by JPS Health Network and Acclaim Physician Group.
  • Participate in the cardiothoracic call schedule as defined by the department.
  • Assist in the operating room for elective, urgent, and emergent adult cardiac surgery (CABG, valve replacement, aortic dissection) and adult thoracic surgery (robotic lung surgery, lobectomy, decortication) as instructed.
  • Attend quality improvement and team meetings as instructed.
  • Maintain own licensing and credentialing to practice, including all required certifications.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduated from an accredited Physician Assistant program OR Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) with RNFA certification.
  • 2+ years of cardiothoracic surgery experience OR experience as an advanced practice provider with first assist in the OR.
  • Current unrestricted licensure to practice as required by the State of Texas.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; may obtain within 60 days of hire and must be maintained current throughout employment.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification; may obtain within 60 days of hire and must be maintained current throughout employment.
  • Completion of unit-specific competency‑based orientation program within 90 days of hire.
  • 5+ years of cardiothoracic surgery OR experience as an advanced practice provider with first assist in the OR preferred.
  • Proficiency or willingness to develop skills in intra‑aortic balloon pump insertion/removal, pacer management/pacing wire removal, endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting, Swan‑Ganz insertion and removal, radial artery harvest (endoscopic or open), and chest tube placement preferred.
  • Knowledge of advanced cardiothoracic surgical techniques and care management within the specialty area.
  • Knowledge and understanding of customer service principles.
