Job summary

MetroHealth in Cleveland seeks an Inpatient Trauma & Trauma/Surgical ICU Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to deliver direct patient care in collaboration with Trauma Surgery physicians. The APP will manage acute, critically ill patients and perform advanced procedures as part of a multidisciplinary team.

You will participate in rounds, interpret labs/imaging, and coordinate with surgeons, intensivists, and therapists to develop discharge plans.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in PA/AGACNP/ACNP or equivalent.
• National certification through NCCPA, ANCC, or AACN.
• Licensure as PA or APRN in Ohio.
• Eligibility for federal DEA registration.
• Current BLS and ATLS certifications (or obtained within required timeframes).
• Knowledge of sterile techniques and aseptic practices.
• Meet clinical privileges requirements with MetroHealth.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Trauma attending physicians, residents, and APPs for daily rounds on trauma floors and ICU.
• Collect data and interpret labs/imaging to develop assessments and care plans.
• Manage complex postoperative and critically ill patients across trauma, acute care surgery, transplant, vascular, and general surgery.
• Perform bedside procedures for surgical and non-surgical patients.
• Complete timely documentation and carry out care plans.
• Develop disposition plans with multidisciplinary team.
• Respond to trauma cases in resuscitation bay and stabilize high-acuity patients per ATLS.
• Promote health through prevention and patient advocacy.

Inpatient Trauma & Trauma/Surgical ICU Advanced Practice Provider (APP)

Position Overview:

Inpatient Trauma/Trauma & Surgical ICU Advanced Practice Provider (APP) delivers direct patient care consistent with the APPs education, experience, and certification, in collaboration with the attending Trauma Surgery physicians. This includes a fast-paced and dynamic environment, you will have the opportunity to provide advanced, evidence-based care to critically ill patients. The APP will be expected to have a thorough understanding of trauma care and management, including advanced skills in assessment, diagnosis and treatment of acute and critically ill patients.

Key Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with Trauma attending physicians, general surgery residents, and APPs to complete daily rounds on the trauma and surgical floors and in the intensive care unit (ICU).
• Collecting data and interpreting laboratory and imaging results in developing and document assessments and care plans.
• Working collaboratively with surgeons, intensivists, and multidisciplinary teams, the APP manages complex postoperative and medically fragile patients across a wide range of surgical specialties, including trauma, acute care surgery, transplant, vascular, and general surgery.
• Perform bedside procedures for both surgical and non-surgical patients
• Work with the team to complete timely documentation and carry out care plans effectively.
• Partner with Trauma APPs, Trauma attendings, surgical residents, nursing, physical, occupational and speech therapies, social work and case management to develop disposition plans with a multidisciplinary team approach.
• Respond to trauma cases in the resuscitation bay, perform trauma survey assessments, and stabilize high-acuity patients in accordance with Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) guidelines.
• Promote consumer, family, and community health through preventative health care actions and patient advocacy.

Required Qualifications:

• Graduate of an accredited masters degree program for:
  • Physician Assistant (PA)
  • Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP)
  • Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or equivalent grandfathered certification.
• National certification through NCCPA, ANCC, or AACN.
• Licensure:
  • PA: License through the State Medical Board of Ohio.
  • NP: License as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) and Registered Nurse (RN) through the Ohio Board of Nursing.
• Eligibility for federal DEA registration.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or obtained within 90 days of hire.
• Advance Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification obtained within 180 days of hire.
• Additional advanced life support certifications (as applicable to practice area) obtained within 180 days of hire.
• Knowledge of sterile techniques and aseptic practices.
• Meet requirements for clinical privileges in the specialty/department with The MetroHealth System and apply for privileges at the time of hire.
• Maintain a standard care arrangement or supervision agreement as required by Ohio law.

Preferred Qualifications (preferred but not required for otherwise qualified candidates):

• One year of Advanced Practice Provider experience
• Experience in trauma surgery or critical care settings
• Proficiency in procedural skills such as central and arterial line placement, ventilator management, chest tube placement, laceration repair and FAST exams
• Preference will be given to qualified candidates with an interest in working consistent night shifts. Candidates who commit to a straight night-shift schedule will be eligible for an additional night-shift incentive.

Other department-specific qualifications for providers will be addressed through the Certificate of Authority and credentialing process.

Work Environment:

The APP will work at Cleveland's most experienced Level 1 Trauma Center at MetroHealth's primary facility in Cleveland. This role requires adaptability, flexibility in scheduling, and a commitment to delivering consistent, high-quality care across diverse clinical settings. The position includes day shift coverage, with potential for night shift coverage based on staffing needs. Holiday and weekend coverage is required. Shifts may vary but primarily will be 12 hours length.
