Position Summary

The Enfield Public Schools Adult Education Program is seeking a highly qualified, student-centered GED Teacher to provide academic instruction that prepares adult learners to earn their Connecticut High School Equivalency Diploma through successful completion of the GED examination.

The GED Teacher facilitates instruction in Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies while creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes student persistence, achievement, and transition to college and career opportunities. The successful candidate will understand the unique needs of adult learners and employ culturally responsive, data-driven instructional practices that support learners from diverse educational, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction

• Deliver high-quality instruction aligned to GED content standards in Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies.
• Provide differentiated and culturally responsive instruction to adult learners with varying academic skill levels, educational experiences, and learning needs.
• Utilize adult learning principles and evidence-based instructional practices to maximize student engagement and achievement.
• Incorporate digital literacy skills, educational technology, and online learning platforms into instruction.
• Prepare students for computer-based GED testing through regular technology integration.
• Foster a classroom culture that promotes respect, inclusion, accountability, and academic growth.

Assessment and Progress Monitoring

• Administer and interpret diagnostic, formative, and practice assessments to evaluate student readiness for the official GED examination.
• Analyze assessment data, including GED Ready practice test results, to identify instructional needs and develop individualized learning plans.
• Monitor student progress and adjust instruction to improve learning outcomes and maximize GED completion rates.
• Provide timely feedback to learners regarding their academic performance and testing readiness.

Lesson Planning and Curriculum Development

• Develop, implement, and adapt lesson plans aligned with GED standards and Connecticut Adult Education requirements.
• Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of adult learners.
• Integrate real-world applications, workforce readiness skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving opportunities into classroom instruction.
• Design learning experiences that support students' personal, educational, and career goals.

Student Support and Retention

• Foster a welcoming, encouraging, and supportive learning environment that promotes student confidence and persistence.
• Build positive relationships with adult learners and support students in overcoming barriers to educational success.

• Collaborate with Adult Education staff to connect students with available support services and community resources.

Program Administration

• Maintain accurate student attendance records, gradebooks, assessment documentation, and performance reports.
• Complete all required state and local documentation in a timely manner.
• Comply with Connecticut Adult Education policies, procedures, and reporting requirements.
• Participate in faculty meetings, professional development activities, training, and program initiatives as required.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Valid Connecticut Teaching Certificate.
• Connecticut Adult Education Endorsement – Noncredit Mandated Programs (#107), or eligibility and willingness to obtain.
• Willingness to obtain Connecticut State GED certification if required.
• Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
• Demonstrated proficiency with instructional technology, online learning platforms, and virtual teaching tools.

Preferred

• Experience teaching GED preparation, adult education, alternative education, or secondary education.
• Experience working with adult learners, multilingual learners, and students with diverse learning needs.
• Background in Special Education or teaching multi-level classrooms.

• Compensation will be in accordance with the Enfield Public Schools Adult Education salary schedule and available program funding.
