Job summary

Meriden Adult Education is seeking a qualified Citizenship Instructor to teach adults preparing to become United States citizens. Schedule: Wednesdays, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Maloney High School in Meriden, CT. This part-time role focuses on citizenship prep, U.S.

history, government, civics, and language development. The ideal candidate will have experience with adult education, strong communication skills, and CT certification endorsements (106/107/088) or be actively pursuing them.

Qualifications

• Experience teaching adult learners, ESL, citizenship, social studies or related subjects preferred.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience with citizenship preparation and/or adult education preferred.
• Must hold or be actively pursuing CT Adult Education certification (endorsements 106, 107, or 088).

Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging citizenship preparation lessons.
• Teach U.S. history, government, and civics.
• Prepare students for naturalization interview and test.
• Teach foundational and higher-level math concepts.
• Support students in English language and interview skills.
• Maintain attendance and program records.
• Create a welcoming, inclusive classroom environment.
• Communicate with staff regarding student progress.

Responsibilities:

• Plan and deliver engaging citizenship preparation lessons
• Teach U.S. history, government, and civics
• Prepare students for the naturalization interview and citizenship test
• Teach and reinforce foundational and higher-level math concepts
• Support students in developing English language and interview skills as needed
• Maintain student attendance and other required program records
• Create a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment
• Communicate with Adult Education staff regarding student progress and program needs.

Qualifications:

• Experience teaching adult learners, ESL, citizenship, social studies, or a related subject preferred
• Strong communication and organizational skills
• Ability to work effectively with students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds
• Experience with citizenship preparation and/or adult education is preferred
• Must hold or be actively pursuing Connecticut Adult Education certification, endorsement 106, 107, or 088

Salary

$45.96 per hour
