Job summary

City of Clovis is seeking an Animal Services Attendant at the Miss Winkles Pet Adoption Center to care for dogs and cats, assist the public with adoptions, and maintain records. Responsibilities include feeding, cleaning, vaccinations, and data entry; strong customer service and accuracy are essential.

Position requires a California driver’s license and availability for shift work and weekends. High school diploma or equivalent; six months experience with animals preferred.

Job description

DEFINITION

Under the supervision of the Supervisor of Animal Services at the Miss Winkles Pet Adoption Center: Perform animal care functions; interact closely with citizens to facilitate the adoption of a dog or cat; clean animal areas and feed animals throughout the day; perform a variety of clerical support duties; and perform related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class may work with immediate supervision or independently. Incumbents receive thorough instructions when tasks are initially assigned and after training are expected to perform duties without constant supervision. Positions in this class are expected to make good decisions and judgments when working independently and refer to the supervisor for instruction on matters which do not conform to established instructions, policies, or procedures.

Conduct a wide variety of animal care duties and functions; maintain and clean dog and cat living areas regularly; feed and water dogs and cats; greet and interact with citizens; facilitate dog and cat adoptions; show dogs and cats to interested citizens and provide information; administer animal vaccinations; adhere to animal disease and illness management and safety precautions; process and document all animal intake information upon entrance into the facility and update as needed; operate a computer to produce a variety of documents; operate standard office equipment; answer questions and provide service to the public; enter, edit, and retrieve data from the database system; file, answer phones, and write reports; keep accurate records; coordinate inventory and order supplies; participate in the public relations activities of the division; observe safety regulations and safe work practices particularly in the handling of animals and the operation of vehicles; operate city vehicles to transport animals, pick up supplies, attend meetings/trainings, and to complete department errands needed for operation of facilities; may be assigned to work required shift work and weekends; and perform related work as required.

LICENSE REQUIRED
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License and a good driving record.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education:

  • Education equivalent to graduation from high school and attending college, or planning to attend college.

And

Experience:

  • A minimum of six (6) months of experience working with dogs, cats, and/or farm animals.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • College level coursework in animal science or a closely related field.
Knowledge of:
  • Intermediate computer operations;
  • Intermediate public communication skills;
  • Basic math and record keeping;
  • Care and feeding of domestic animals;
  • Animal disease and illness;
  • Administration of vaccinations;
  • Dog behavior and basic dog training skills;
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
Ability to:
  • Work shift work and weekends;
  • Operate a computer and related devices using city-installed software;
  • Read, understand, and apply moderately difficult materials;
  • Understand policies and procedures and apply them without immediate supervision;
  • Maintain records;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Work day and evening shifts, weekdays, and weekends;
  • Operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Strength: Medium work-lifting, carrying and/or pushing 50 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
